hello pd friends, i have a little problem ... i cant resize the patch size .the scrolls and the window borders are out of my screen because i made the patches with a computer with high resolution , and now im on a normal computer. is there any trick for resizing the patches ?

hello, also you can edit your patch with a text editor and modify the first line
#N canvas 1 1 500 500 10; where the first and second number is X and Y position after comes the size width and heigth and the fifth number is the font size

you can open the patch in a texteditor and modify the first line a bit. #N canvas 0 0 454 304 12; i think the 3th and the 4th number is what you are looking for. good luck :-) eni

Changing the font size rescales everything. It will make a mess of your patch by overlapping objects but at least it will enable you to access the elements that are currently off-window.

You can also edit your pd file and change the first line to something like:
#N canvas 0 0 800 600 12;
In this example 800 would be the width, 600 the lenght of the window and 12 the font size.

what about the frame of the window ? can't you even grab it with mouse ? if so, you can drag the window into your visible area until you can reach the bottom right end of it to resize.
if this is not possible:
open your PD-patch with a text editor and replayce the first line (the main canvas size) with values that fit your screen resolution:
i.e.
#N canvas 0 0 800 600 10;
makes a window the size of 800x600 and puts it in the left top corner of your screen. font size is 10 in this example. (i wouldn't change your original fontsize - to avoid a GUI mess...)

Is this a Macintosh, by any chance? And they sued Microsoft over GUI elements, lol.

Yes, this is one of the biggest annoying things about OS X. The window resizing is limited to the bottom right corner of the window, so if the patch is tall enough to have the bottom off screen, you're screwed without editing the file in a text editor. AAAAARRRRRRGGGGG!!!!

No. Maximize the patch using the green button. This normally brings the bottom-right corner into the screen.
You're screwed if the window position makes the title bar offscreen, and then you have to edit the .pd file, or edit pd.tk so that it never sets window positions (just delete the line that says "wm geometry").
On Linux you normally have some better shortcuts, but this only works if *some* part of the window is on-screen. Else you may be able to right-click on the dock entry (at least KDE does it; I don't have GNOME at hand so I can't try)
Pd could be fixed in order to prevent offscreen windows. This can be done by replacing the aforementioned "wm geometry" line by something else which I'll leave as an exercise to the reader...:)

just about any OS lets you resize a window which all borders are offscreen. windows just 'maximize' it from the taskbar. linux just mod1-right resize it..
there must be an extension to OSuX to make its WM not sux so much?

i commited a fix for this in devel_0_38 or so, and put a patch up on the patch tracker for it. but it was part of a larger patch that wasnt accepted by miller, and got orphaned in the move to devel_0_39.
you can just ask tk for the screen dimensions and resize the window accordingly..

Is that simpler than opening a patch in a text editor?

On both WIndows and Debian Linux you can hit Alt-Space to bring up the size-place-etc. menu, and hit M to move with the arrow keys. Well I'm using Gnome, I guess it might depend on that? I also see that Alt-F7 is a shortcut to move a window. I know in Windows these things work even if the window is completely off-screen. OSX has nothing like this; it seems to have very very few hotkeys for most things, and never for drop-down menus. Mac users I know (most everyone at my school) are pretty single-button-mouse-dependent.
Wow, I just thought of something- shouldn't all PD patchers have one of these? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290011790850

i once used a fujitsu-lifebook with a touchscreen to control(!) our 3d-mixer (both the control-unit and the 3d-mixer being pd-patches)
patching is horror (so i would say: no, pd _patchers_ (as in "coders") don't really have a need for such device). it is almost as awful as patching on a pda. from the users pov it was quite ok (the [bng]s were HUGE)

Wow! That's a real startrek toy! I shudder to think how much one costs.
But, as with Chucks suggestion on the touchscreen, my 0.2c would be - fine for performance where you've already worked out your interface, but rather little use for synthesis development because of resolution. I tend to have a whole window in 1024-1280 and I think a small area like that would be clumbsy to use with my 10 pork saussages. Anyone got any experience of using touch tech like this? Last time I used one (about a year ago - a toshiba I think) it was less than adequate, the tracking (capacitive) made the cursor jump about quite a lot.

regular single touch screens are probably pretty good these days, but you're right - would't be very good for patching because of a number of reasons. mode switching from screen to keyboard (not a big deal, and maybe less of a big deal then doing so w/ the mouse?), screen resolution to finger size (maybe zooming could resolve this?), and the lack of multiple touch functionality, and i sure other problems.
if multitouch functionality were supported, there are all kinds of obvious and nonobvious advantages to touch screen tech...
imagine: gestures to zoom/unzoom, on-screen application-specific virtual keboards (no. more. multikey. keybindings. ever!), and so many other wonderful things i can't even image now.
the big problem is lack of support on all os's that i know of for muiltiple simultanious "pointer" input (same as "touches") - if the os doesn't support it, applications can't ether, so it's a pretty low level problem and barrier to this kind of user interaction. the MPX server project is really exciting because it finally adresses this and makes it possible to have more complex user interaction and alowing that to expand out to program development. seriously, it's 2006 already!

Do you recall the threads about possible shortcuts for making connections? I've never used a touch screen, but it can't be harder than a mouse for connecting inlets and outlets. Resolution might be a problem, but I think humans are pretty good at adjusting their touch for such things, and I already hit the wrong inlets/outlets all the time with my mouse. If you tap the wrong outlet, just let go and tap the right one. Also, think of the possibilities using data structures to control sound, using one's fingers. People are already doing this.
