hello,
i'm having somes problem configuring my linux computer for gem. for diferents (and stranges) reasons, the only way I found to have DRI working on my dual screen (ati 9000) is to use 2 diferents drivers. in this mode, I have 2 diferents desktop, applications can't be moved from 1 desktop to the other. i'm triing to have my pd patch on 1 screen and the gemwindow on the other. offset messages on gemwin don't work. (the gem window is moved but does not go to the other screen)
is it possible to have only the gemwin on the second display?
thanks cyrille
hi cyrille,
in gem use [create :0.1<
if you want to test you setup: DISPLAY=:0.1 xclock
(time will appear on the second head). patrick

hello,
thanks, create :0.1 works fine.
in order to test this configuration, i run a patch using 80% cpu. after 5 min my system completly freeze : nothings move exept my mouse. no sound. the only thing I was able to do is to connect to my computer with sssh from another computer : XFree86 was using 99% cpu. a reboot command does have no effect, I had to press the power buttton.
for me, it looks like a problem with the ATI drivers (?) how does peoples uses ATI card under linux (wich driver)?
thanks cyrille

hi,
i'm running gem with an ati card on linux. i'm using the driver from ati.com: http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html
if you want, i can test your patch with my system?
also, i can't use xv output in pdp with dual head setup... only glx or sdl.
patrick

hello patrick, thanks for your answer.
I'm using ubuntu linux. the ati driver are included in the distro. i'll try to investigated...
it's not a problem related to the patch : i tried with my performance patch that i used for 1 year, on lot's of diferents computer without any problem.
thanks cyrille

hello, thanks for your answer. create :0.1 is the solution I was looking for.
with the patrick help, i sucess using gem with 2 X server. the only problem is that few minutes after the creation of the gem windows, my computer freeze : xfree is using 99% of the cpu.
it is strange that this append only on my computer...
same driver in big desktop mode work fine. so i'll use this mode even if it does not allow me to use my 1400 points screen better than in 1024 points...
thanks cyrille

<sorry mathieu, I have the lazy habit of sending to lists by replying to one - it went wrong.>
Hello,
How would I go if I want to concantate numbers and symbols?
I want to combine text with a number. Like:
Number1 Number2
I want to increase/decrease the number behind the symbol - I'm going to use it for a label that I want to be set and labels don't like spaces in their name.
sprintf from cyclone.

Hey, thanks cyrille, claudius - list2symbol works wonders. I was hoping to solve it using buit in objects, but I'm growing dependant on zexy more and more anyways.
I wanted to share with you( since i've been tinkering along on this) that when you do a
[$1-Number (
it it works nice too. but reading 89-Number is a bit more akward then Number-89. ( would still be nice if you can 'messily' concantate stuff perl-wise tho - and use regexp in a message box too :))
thank you for your responses!

If you want to put one number in a symbol, you can use [makefilename]
float | [makefilename Number%d] | symbol
I think you can also use %s in the makefilename pattern to put symbols into a string, and you can use "set" messages to chain makefilenames together. makefilename is a Pd internal.
If you want to turn a list of symbols and floats into a symbol, then there is [list2symbol] in the zexy library.
list of stuff to join | | symbol to put between them at the join | | [list2symbol] | symbol
If the left inlet is "list a 2 c" and the right inlet is "symbol -" then the outlet gives "symbol a-2-c".

I do it (concatenation) like this but there are probably other ways:
[ 123
|
[ sprintf Number%d ]
|
[symbol $1]
|
[$1(
|
Here sprintf works the same as the c function sprintf, with %d being replaced by a decimal number, %f by a float, %s by a string, for instance. Martin
