Hallo!
We discussed at the LAC that we would like to apply again this year for google's summer of code project, which is about to start today (http://code.google.com/soc/2008/).
I started a wiki at: http://puredata.info/dev/summer-of-code/GoogleSummerOfCodeIdeas/ where everyone can put in ideas and wishes. Of course you can also write your ideas to the mailinglist for discussion and I will add them afterwards to the wiki.
Every pd developer who wants to support the project but is no student anymore is invited to join as mentor, since the number of sponsored projects by google depends on the number of mentors and students.
So please put in your ideas and apply as mentor and student !
One more question: Who of the mentors would like to make the main communication with google ? Because someone has to fill out the application (the material from last year is also at http://puredata.info/dev/summer-of-code/GoogleSummerOfCodeIdeas/ and http://puredata.info/dev/summer-of-code/SummerOfCode ). I would suggest Hans or IOhannes or anyone else who wants to spend some time with it ;)
LG Georg
I'd be happy to join any team that has a games+audio+Pd proposal as a mentor.

I have added this: http://puredata.info/dev/summer-of-code/LibPd
Which is my proposal to make it easier to compile the audio-engine part of Pd as a library and link it into your own projects. This has been asked about numerous times on the list, almost always to do with games related projects, and we all know that it's happening already in Spore.
Also, this could really help with some of the other SOC projects like PluggoPd, PdVST, etc. so it's highly re-useable.
The only problem here is the confusing name; there is already a PdLib project, which in my opinion should be called 'PdExternals' or something, but LibPd seems a very appropriate name for a project for using Pd as a library.
I guess I'm happy to mentor this but Andy is probably a better candidate than me if he's interested! Or we could co-mentor - whatevs.
Best,
Chris.
I think this is something I'd be interested in as a student... Especially if it helps pluggoPD along (is PluggoPD an active project or something to be potentially carried forward into SoC 2008?). For that matter, are most of the 2007 suggestions still valid for 2008? Are some not?
Also Chris, I think you added your LibPD suggestion to the 2007 summer of code ideas list on http://puredata.info/dev/summer-of-code/GoogleSummerOfCodeIdeas ... Just wanted to let you know that I moved it up to the "Project Ideas for SummerOfCode 2008" section.
Cheers, -martin

Nice, so we already have one mentor+student combination ... ;)

AFAIK PluggoPD is no active project and of course would be nice for 2008 too.

In principle any suggestion is valid. I marked now the active project from 2007 as _finished_ or _in_work_, all the others are still not started ...

Mark Danks left me with the impression that EA found it rather easy and that, far from being trivial, there were no weird hiccups.

You've written the proposal and librification (sorry I couldn't help making up that word) isn't exactly a strong point for me. Neither is cross platform thinking. And if this were a project I'd like to see it done well. If I can support you Chris of course I will.
I'm glad we already have one student interersted, this is an important step for Pd imho.
In light of the recent discussion about Blender + Pd is there maybe some possibility of a combined cross application proposal?
I don't know much about how this Google SOC works.
Another thought I had;
For sponsorship, what are the chances of EA or other companies that are making use of Pd sponsoring a team, or folding back in some source changes they've made?

Hallo!
In light of the recent discussion about Blender + Pd is there maybe some possibility of a combined cross application proposal?
As far as I remember it does not need to be restricted to pd. The Pd-mentors will decide which projects are accepted (not google), so if they think that blender+pd would be a nice project this is of course possible ...
LG Georg
Blender + Pd sounds like a good project.
As for EA releasing their code, since they haven't done it already,
they are probably unlikely to do it. But it can't hurt to ask.

Count me in as a mentor as well. To anyone who submitted a project
last time and didn't get accepted, I think you should submit it
again. The amount of funding we get is directly based on how many
project submissions there are, so let's help each other submit lots
of projects!
Shall we apply as Pure Data this time? I am ok to apply as IEM
again, but it just seems that most projects apply as the project
rather than as another institution. Does anyone want to be the GSoC

PDaExtended: build externals for PDa in the same style as Pd-extended

I'd like to apply for some Mentos. I like mixed fruit or grape. As for Pd, I can't think of something major enough to call for Google SoC, but I'll keep thinking. There are lots of things for which I've created workarounds that I don't think about much anymore. For instance, when searching through a subpatch for one kind of pointer, if I have the outlet for other pointers directed into a "next" message, with a sizable list, I get stack overflows, so I use [del 0], which eliminates the stack overflow but sometimes necessitates another delay later in the chain to prevent the next thing from happening before the list is finished.
Dunno if that's worth a Summer of Code commission though. If it is, I hope at least one of the mentors will fill out the application as "The Freshmaker."

Do you want to apply as student or as mentor ? I don't know if a "Freshmaker" is suggestive, maybe try to formulate it in a more compact way with some definitive points which should be done.

I have just a minor suggestion for an improvement. What if it were possible to edit a Pd patch as text from within Pd? I often open a patch in a text editor in order to mass copy sends and receives or GUI elements or whatever. The syntax is straightforward enough that sometimes this is quicker than clicking, for a whole bunch of items. It would be cool if I could do that from within Pd, without closing the patch...

This sounds like a great idea to me. If I add a dozen or so GUI elements and I want to quickly set their sends and receives, I have to save the patch, close it, open emacs, edit, save, close emacs, and reopen the patch. Would be nice to hit one button to switch. I think it would be even better if it were perhaps a right-click option for subpatches and abstractions to open them as code. I have created patches in the past just for editing other patches as text automatically. If that could be done with a running patch I'd be a happy guy.

If a text editor is running through PureData, the user will have to deal with dropped keycode, so it doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

I think this is an interesting idea, and it is feasible if the text
editor was editing the copy of the patch that is in memory. It would
not be easy, but doable.

there's text-editor code in Krzysztof Chaya's library, that I've wanted to glom into the vanilla Pd source for some time now (exactly so that people can pop up text editor windows for any 'binbuf' contents).
Only thing holding me back is two minor issues: 1. I can't decide whether it's appropriate to glom te whole of Cyclone into Pd; and 2. assuming I don't do that, I'm worried it might break cyclone itself to export symbols from Pd that are also defined by cyclone.

I think that #2 would be the best bet. You could just rename the
symbols in question. Didn't Krzysztof mostly use prefixes like
"hammer" and "sickle" on his shared functions, etc.? You could just
remove those.

I always vote for bringing more objects into vanilla. with cyclone it is a little bit different, because many cyclone objects can be created as abstractions and some of the objects are nameclashers (Append, gate, counter...). what ever happened to the cyclone object class? I remember there used to be an object that let you open max patches by right clicking on it. but for the rest of the cyclone objects please "glom"(???) them into Pd. marius.

wouldn't it be way cooler to be able to copy a (part of a) pd-patch (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C) and paste it into your favourite text-editor? and then do the reverse to get the patch back into pd?
any text-editor widget i could imagine would never be as powerful as a _real_ editor (like emacs or vi)...
i think desiredata has something like this (at least you could Ctrl-V the text-form of a patch from an email into dd)
(of course you could copy the text from the "text-editor view" within pd to your favourite editor and vice-versa; which would give a fast (and always available) editor (e.g. for simple edits); but it might be easier to implement just the global clipboard)

I think there is room for both, plus Kzrysztof already has a built-in
editor implemented. I think the built-in editor would be good for
quick, small edits.
