hey guys, i've finally got a linux box again and the time to scratch this itch to play around with pdp/pidip ... for some reason some of the crucial pdp objects can't load. when trying to load up control.pd i get:
pdp_xv ... couldn't create pdp_v4l ... couldn't create pdp_trigger ... couldn't create
but lots of other pdp objects are loading fine in the patch like [pdp_motion_phase] so it looks like the pdp library is loading.
so here are my details:
redhat 9 pd .36 pdp 0.11.1 (compiled cleanly) an nvidia geforce 4 go with nvidia's driver (which i think is supposed to support the xvideo extension)
any pointers would be appriciated :)

Hi everybody
I just downloaded the installer for OSX from http://homepage.mac.com/atl/pd/installers.html
and started to learn PD. So far I am playing around with several downloaded patches. I am still standing before a huge amount of trees...
I wanted to ask if I can record the soundout of PD to aif or wav onto my harddisk? Can I do that with "Audio Hijack?" http://www.osxaudio.com/index.php?story=444 Or is there another possibilty? Maybe I just need anthoer patch????? And whats the difference between patch and external???
sorry for the stupid questions.

You can use 'writesf' to record PD's sounds to the hardisk, they can be played back using 'readsf'. The difference between a patch and an external is that an external is a PD object, such as 'metro' or 'dac~' which has been compiled as a dll, you can then link Pd to this dll when you startup and Pd see's this object as one of its own. A patch is simply the window in which you connect all your objects together with patch cords, its called a 'patch' because it resembles the way old analogue synths worked, in that one would patch modules together with patch cords to create different synthesis techniques. Any enjoy the software, right clicking on the object mentioned above should give you help files on them.
regards, Rory.

I can feel with you: Pd is daunting at first. But with patience you will get into it.
I wanted to ask if I can record the soundout of PD to aif or wav onto my harddisk?
Yes. There is an object that does just that and it is calle [writesf~]. If you right-click on it (or Ctrl-Click? I don't know the Mac...), then you can select "Help" and get an explanation of how it works.
Can I do that with "Audio Hijack?"
You don't need to.
Maybe I just need anthoer patch????? And whats the difference between patch and external???
A patch is something, that you can edit inside of Pd. If you click on it and it opens, it's a (sub-)patch. An external is a binary object, that can load in Pd. It does not have a name ending in .pd but one of .pd_darwin, .pd_linux or .dll
sorry for the stupid questions.
There are no stupid questions but those, no asked. Oh no, proverbial time... ;)

You don't need to.
Actually, I took a look, and I don't think you can. The current architecture of Audio Hijack expects an .app bundle to launch, and can't deal with the Pd command line.
Still, that was potentially a creative solution. I'd recommend the other [writesf~] suggestions.

There also is Jack for OS-X (jackit.sf.net). I don't know, if jack in Pd-OS-X works, though.
I also don't know the current status of Mac-Jack, but OS-X is one of the targets for Jack.
