has anyone developed an external which can download the text from a url? i'm working with some data sources which are available via remote cgis

Guenter Geiger wrote a "shell" external for his ggee library that i think might be useful. perhaps you could interface it with a wget command and retrieve the data that way?
a related note: i've only seen this external on linux. does anyone know if [shell] compiles on OSX?

hmm, seems to be quite old. It should compile out of the CVS. Just go to the build/darwin directory and do a make. It would be great if we could find someone that has an OSX machine and some experience with compiling, who compiles these and offers them as a precompiled package. Volunteers ?

Funny you mention that, I am in the process of doing just that. I am planning on releasing MacOS X packages to mirror the debian packages generated from the CVS.
