This is kind of embarrasing, and [ot] - I should have trusted my instincts rather than the web...(but which bit?)
DON'T buy a Pentium M if you want to run PD under Linux (As I do). If you want a Pentium III (3) you can get one cheaper, but Pentium M under Linux is Pentium 3.
I thought it would be nice if newbies could search and find this...to avoid my mistake, and I should know better!
Anyone want to buy a pentium M? No graphics accelleration? I am a certified fool!...

Huh? What does all that mean?
I run a Pentium M 750 with great success under Linux and Pd. I think, it is a formidable platform. Oh, and graphics acceleration is not done in the CPU anyway.

If you have a Pentium-M cpu you should use "-march=pentium3" since it's a Pentium 3 deriviate, unless you're using GCC >=3.4 which is marked as unstable. GCC 3.4 has a specific march-setting for Pentium-M machines.
Looks like with GCC >=3.4 you could use the -march=pentium-m flag.

Once again, I write, and somebody else is doing so at that very moment! I shall try gentoo, and the flags, but the graphics thing will still stop me if I can't find a solution (see last posting about p(i)d(i)p).

I am incorporating optimization flags in the new Pd-extended build
system. So it should be quite easy to build the whole Pd-extended
package with any given set of compiler flags. Hopefully we can then
start putting out releases targeted for such CPUs where it actually
makes a difference.

well, all centrino machines are pentium 3 based. i really don't see the problem, with this machine. my 1.86 pentium-m is about as fast as a p3 3ghz. since pd is single-threaded, it wouldn't profit from hyper-threading, but that would even limit pd's performance. imho, the pentium-m is the best platform to run pd on, at the moment...
but, if you post your problems, maybe we can get it running ...

Well, I know graphics acceleration is done outside of the CPU. That's what I meant. I bought an Acer Aspire 1691 WLMi about 2 1/2 weeks ago, my first laptop (and considering my paycheck, my last for a long, long while). I tried for 2 weeks to get Linux working with the 1280x800 display to no avail, and to get pidip working. Then I discovered a few things.
All you guys are probably using better distros than me. I'm giving up on Fedora as of now, but I saw success stories on some of the Linux Laptop sites, so I decided to give it a go. But, alas, my graphics chips is not the Radeon x700 promised on the website, not even the x600 I saw in some postings. It is an Intel i915 shared-memory chip with no accelleration. Intel's driver did not work at all, so I was stuck with VESA at 1024x768. Pidip never worked even though it compiled (with ffmpeg cvs from the 7th of July 2004 by the way - I tried 6 dates...), but from searching the list it looks like it would never work anyway - xvinfo reports no display adaptors found.
And the performance - I get 75% CPU usage for something I have seen take 48% on a 2.4GHz P4. I have read something on the net about using ICC (Intel's version of gcc) rather than the standard one. Is this what you do?
I may be doing something stupid, or just ignorant, but you caught me just as I am about to sell this thing on ebay (the shop have refused to take it back) and buy another laptop. The pidip is the main reason, because even if I can get the proc up to speed, I want to do live video.
Any Ideas? PS the list archive search engine reports no results for the search string 'pd' - maybe it's not working - I'll email Johannes.

I also have one of the newer Intel chips in my laptop, GM900, which I think, is the same as yours, just a different name. Here it is accelerated fine, but I use x.org. The driver for that card is quite new in X, and it's not supported in xfree86.
Before you sell it, I would recommend to test it with Ubuntu. Almost everything worked out of the box on my machine using Ubuntu, I just needed to tweek a bit with Wireless. It's important to also load the agpart module and some more stuff to get acceleration working. I don't know Fedora, so I cannot comment on how this works. I can just say that it is possible to make it work, and Ubuntu is one of the easiest and fastest way to get up to speed.

I attached my xorg.conf and the file /etc/modules, which on Ubuntu/Debian contains modules to load on boot, as they are on my Laptop with an intel chip. PDP works with xvideo and glx, and Gem works accelerated with that. The Intel chip also is quite fast. Of course 3D is not as fast as many chips by ATi or NVidia, but it's one of the fastest chipsets that have stable and good open source drivers.

well, i've been experimenting with icc lately ... this does give a better performance, but it's not 100% gcc compatible. to figure out the performance problem, the way to go would be to use a profiler (like oprofile). i'd also recommend to use devel, since the vectorized versions of the basic dsp functions are between 2 and 5 times faster than the compiler-generated, but it depends on your patch, how much you will gain.
oh well, and if the rendering is done by the software instead of the hardware, this will also make a difference ...
