You have a stranger called Gibson in the house. I don't know if and I doubt that this is the reason for your troubles, but device files should be owned by root generally. You can make it so by:
$ chown root.audio /dev/midi* /dev/snd/* $ chmod g+rw /dev/midi* /dev/snd/*
Does (hw) midi work with other software like MusE or pmidi?
