hi everyone,
to make story a short story shorter, i am now living in tokyo / japan. this country accounts for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater. so i decided to be updated via RSS using pd / python / gem. the samples are fetched from freesound (randomly using "earthquake" keyword).
of course, it's stupid to think that this application will save me. but it was fun to do.

That looks like great fun. Is this actually reading the feed in real time (i.e. as a new earthquake is posted, you're notified then)?

thx for the feedback!
exactly, the first feed is the most recent earthquake. i should code something for updating automagically... and also adding the UTC date and time would be easy. i am using BeautifulSoup to parse the html from the feed (for example, fetching the image source (map)).

yeah, I've done something similar with twitter feeds before now (using ruby), although I'm not sure how that worked, I suspect it was reading back through the feed rather than updating, the script to work in real time wasn't complete when I last worked on it.

Sure! Just give me some days to finish it... (i am adding an auto-update option and showing the localtime). But it will be difficult to make it work (for most people), messy patch, lots of dependencies...

hi,
updated the video: http://vimeo.com/13615727
(now with auto-update, depth, local time)
the patch can be download here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1455235/earthquake2pd.tar.gz
but really it's a big mess! you need:
pdextended: http://autobuild.puredata.info/auto-build/ pdmtl: http://wiki.dataflow.ws/PdMtlAbstractions mtl (maybe): http://puredata.info/Members/mtl/
