Hi all!
I have realized lately that Fedora/PlanetCCRMA may not be the best linux rt distro out there in terms of updates for Pd. So I wanted to conduct a survey among pd-list members to know who is using what. It seems like Ubuntu Studio is the distro that's most frequently updated. Too bed because the last time i tried to install it on my laptop it didn't work... Any advice would be appreciated. I need a rt kernel, of course...

Try KXStudio, it's based on Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) and KDE 4.5, and it works
out of the box with jack2 in low-latency :)

Sorry...
I can't say i did a proper benchmark, but I have tried JACK with and without a rt kernel installed, and I know that there is a subtantial difference. I need a really low latency, below 5 ms, and I don't believe a standrad linux kernel can achieve that.

Hi List!, I use Linux Ubuntu 9.04, test 9.10 and 10.04... i prefer ubuntu for ease and support, is confortable for replicate experiences in the educational field. You can compile the low latency Kernel, and the aplications are good.

For now, FireWire devices are the ones that really gain with a RT kernel. The generic Kernels are becoming more and more timing eficient, they absorbed a lot of the RT patches made by Ingo Molnar et al. I dont know why didnt Ubuntu worked on your computer. If fedora worked, ubuntu should also work.

As Far as I tested it, yes. I tried 10.10 with a FA-101 and without RT kenel and already with the new FireWire stack/FFADO i could achieve 8 ms latency with a ricoh chipset. so for now it seems it is going very nice. altough much improvement is needed. Ubuntu studio team is working on workflows and and in some modifications for the next release (natty /11.04). If you want to tes the Alesio's RT kernels you can join the mailing list. For now, RT kernels will be provided via PPA repositories, so debugging and testing is very needed, more when people push hard the system, like with PD :D Ubuntu Studio team is commited to bring together most people connected to multimedia and working upstream, and mainly with debian multimedia. Also I should remeber that Ubuntu studio is a community version, with some help from canonical, (servers, QA, and some more stuff).

I tried it only with 2 ins 2 outs, but jack had the 8 channels open, just wasnt used. I had some people telling me that they made it to 4ms latency with a RT kernel, proper IRQ settings and a Texas Instruments Firewire chipset

I also have a ricoh chipset, and I'm considering to by a FA-101 to use with Linux (I use MOTU with win). Currently I'm still using 9.10 on the audio-laptop by have 10.10 on my netbook, and I'm studying if I should move to 10.10 on the audio-laptop. Your email is a help towards that, cause 8ms is low for my standards :)
If you can test with full load, I'd appreciate any comments on that.

Now does anyone know if i'll loose anything important with this older (but appropriately patched for RT) graphics driver? (btw i don't use graphics for anything important...)

i'll be interested to know your impression if you try this kernel for pd/Gem.

Hi, I tried a lot: Musix U studio ~8.xx, with a lot of problem (xruns, wifi issue, jack stops without any apparent reason, more...) Fedora 10 /CCRMA: was great, but sometimes old version of software in repos (like pd...) U studio again, Lucid: great, but a lot of wifi issues and some others... Now I'm trying Tangostudio, based on Ubuntu Lucid, 64bits... seems to work great, but after installing rtirq and nvidia driver, cause I had a xrun-rain when running jack. Now it's ok. I use RME Multiface /w HDSP Expresscard and an Edirol FA-101... excepted that xruns issue, worked oob. But pd seems to have a problem with rt: with very low latencies (>15ms), I get a lot of DIO errors...

So, running the aforementioned RT kernel, managed to patch the latest nvidia driver following these general instructions: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9233282&postcount=5 I'm already happy because it's quite some time that i haven't had the RT kernel!
As i don't use GEM i cannot tell about it, but Pd got faster. Almost as fast as the 32-bit Pd was (on 64-bit Ubuntu - Hardy that time). It means i can almost use my MIDI sequencer patch without the GUI dropping out. Promising! Now i can dig into the patch for optimisation possibilities, and at the same time, keep on bugging the community for speeding up the GUI :o)
Do you guys think i shall try it with a current 32-bit Pd to see if the 64-bit version is really slower...?
(on a side note to RT kernel experiences: the CPU got hotter indeed, looks like i'll have to tweak the cooling fans again...)

Hi, I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, plus some ubuntu studio stuff (the audio packages and the plugins). I also tried the rt-kernel. It didn't work. But i am amazed, blown away, baffled, etc. Because the generic kernel does have some crazy rt capabilities indeed. I guess the ubuntu studio packages must have created the audio group and jack must have written the proper things in the limit file, but still, it works surprisingly well. Jack can run in rt with a latency as low 4 ms without any xruns, although it crashes.It works just fine at 5.33 ms. Even pd itself work with an extremely low latency (I'd say below 7 ms), I'm assuming that's because it was configured to run in rt during the install. I don't even know if i need JACK anymore. Does any of you know how i can measure the actual latency in Pd? I couldn't tell by ear which config was faster, Pd alone or Pd plus JACK. Looks like it time to say goodbye to rt-kernels...

jack don't add latency, and it's a powerfull sound server... you can connect pd to the outputs of your sound device and/or other sound/midi softwares, then you can save a patchbay to recover your patch... it's one of the most interesting stuffs on linux.
Does any of you know how i can measure the actual latency in Pd?
have a look on jdelay: a simple jack command-line latency-meter. when you start it, a new client appears in jack: connect it between pd out and in, connect in and out in a pd patch, you'll get a time in frame: frame/frequency = t in sec (ex 480 / 48000 = 0.010 = 10 ms). You can connect it between sound device in and out and plug a jack between out and in, you'll get the real round latency... you will have to compile it, README explains all...

But you can use very small buffers on some systems with good audio hardware, so they have the same size you would use inside pd in standalone (64samples). In this case you will not have more latency using jack than using pd standalone. (I'm also only 99.9% sure about this, beware.).

but of course, if you just run pd, you don't need it and you can set latency into pd, I forgot that. I mostly interface pd with other soft ( ardour or any recorder, midi sequencer, some plugin via jack-rack or calf etc...), and I plug midi controllers, but you can do it in qjackctl without running jack (alsa tab in connection window)...

I agree that JACK doesn't seem to add any latency. The thing is, if Pd alone and Pd + JACK end up having the same latency, I don't see why i should bother running two programs. Yet, I'm not sure about Pd's latency. I know that the "Delay" in Audio settings doesn't seem to mean anything realistic at all (correct me if i'm wrong). I can't push it below 8 ms without running into intolerable audio drop-outs, even though JACK is able to run at a latency below 5 ms. As I said, my ear isn't fast enough to detect any difference between both setups. So i guess I'll just try the program that was mentioned in one of the previous messages.
I also have another question. For now only pd vanilla is installed on my laptop, because ubuntu studio packages don't include pd-extended (which by the way is difficult to understand, given all the kind of useless and sometimes redundant apps they do provide). So, say I installed pd-extended, do you think i'll have to tweak something in order to get the same performances as with vanilla (stuff like adding it to the audio group, changing the rt, buffersize, etc...)?
Incidentally, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installed very quickly and without any particular issues. It also starts and stops in no time. The only drawback is (as usual) that the wireless card doesn't work properly out of the box.

jack don't add latency, and it's a powerfull sound server... you can connect pd to the outputs of your sound device and/or other sound/midi softwares, then you can save a patchbay to recover your patch... it's one of the most interesting stuffs on linux.
it does add latency in most cases. you specify the amount of latency by using different period sizes and numbers of periods settings. But you can use very small buffers on some systems with good audio hardware, so they have the same size you would use inside pd in standalone (64samples). In this case you will not have more latency using jack than using pd standalone. (I'm also only 99.9% sure about this, beware.).

but of course, if you just run pd, you don't need it and you can set latency into pd, I forgot that. I mostly interface pd with other soft ( ardour or any recorder, midi sequencer, some plugin via jack-rack or calf etc...), and I plug midi controllers, but you can do it in qjackctl without running jack (alsa tab in connection window)...
Practically speaking - on systems I used until now I could always achieve lower buffer sizes using pd standalone and thus get lower round trip delays too.
I couldn't tell by ear which config was faster, Pd alone or Pd plus JACK.
maybe I'm wrong, but I thing only jack can provide rt...
you can run pd with the -rt flag, without jack. fo me it has proven to be far more stable at the lowest possible latencies than using jack. but this depends on your setup too. I don't use jack when I don't need it.

as said, it depends also on the setup you are using. assuming you get pd to run with alsa or oss and a buffer of 256 samples @ 48kHz you have a minimum delay of 256/48000 s = 5.3 ms. now add a bit for the soundcard's own buffer for in- and output and you have a delay of slightly more than 5.3ms. This would be the case for a stand alone pd.
Now you use jack and use 256 samples as buffer. This will cause pd to use the 256 samples buffer too and no latency is introduced (this is what the jack homepage states too).
However this never worked for me without tweaking my system for hours. I always had to use a slightly increased buffer, for example 3 * 128 or 2
capabilities (don't know) and also the setting of irq and application priorities (tried and succeeded). Ideally with a proper configured system you can use the same buffer size in jack as in pd stand alone. But since lots of people don't know how to configure it properly you will almost always end up with an increased buffer size.
Also note, the default setting of jack which works in almost all systems is 2 * 1024 samples -> the buffer size is 42ms. It's likely any 'realtime' tools uses smaller buffers by default when using oss / alsa. (for example the dj mixing tool xwax.)
Thes's nothing wrong about using jack, but you will have to spend more time if you want to make it bulletproof against xruns.
