I read:

cyclone's [zl] has a sect mode that could be used for that, it will output the elements that are common to both input lists or nothing if there is no match.
cyclone: http://suita.chopin.edu.pl/~czaja/miXed/externs/cyclone.html help: http://test.pilot.fm/pd/patches/help/cyclone-help.tar.gz (still not updated but zl is in there and it's almost done)

hi,
[zl sub] is better, perhaps, since it outputs an index of the matching atom(s). There is also [match], which might be more handy, because a pattern is accepted as argument(s), e.g. [match test] fires when one of the list's atoms is 'test'.
In case substrings (parts of atoms) are to be matched, the sequence [spell] -> [sprintf %c] -> [match t e s t] might do.

hmmm.. sub doesn't seem to work with my version I guess I should go and update (it does nothing , never matches anything but the mode is valid).
There is also [match], which might be more
of course, this is probably the best solution
