I didn't mention, but I have looked at Processing as well. AFAICT, there's little/no support for loading video files (there is for doing webcam capture via quicktime, but that's OS X/Windows only), and none for doing complex convolution/morphology on video streams. Also, the only times I've seen it used, it didn't seem to be an interactive programming environment, ie. livecoding. But I could be completely wrong--my acquaintance with it is quite cursory. Can you provide any further pointers to how awesome Processing is for processing raster video streams?
Thanks much, Ian

Pr0C3551NG is writtein JAVA. its mainly used to blit pixmaps onto a screen in algorithmic ways. i havent seen it do video. somehow i doubt its suited to that.
i'd dive in and check out Packet Forth, even if theres no docs. or maybe convince Aymeric to do some kind of workshop or documentation push on it.
why are you disillusioned with the graphical dataflow model anyways? you know you can do a lot of algorithmic patching with dyn(~), if you want to use PDP objects but dont want to click your arm off..
Thanks much, Ian

There is the starting of a tutorial on https://packets.goto10.org/wiki/PfDoc
A workshop including PF happens this month as well, in London: http://goto10.org/-/pdsummerschool2006

Slick! Last time I'd looked at that page, it was well nigh blank. I'll check it out, and if I can get moving with PF, I'll be glad to help out with more docs.
Too bad London is so far away.
thanks!

Don't you mean Pr0c3$$|n6 ?

Yeah, IIRC, I was giving up on dataflow just about the time Mr. Grill was really polishing up dyn~, so I never quite got into it. I figure I could use dyn~ or python or something else to script Pd and make it easier, but in the end everything makes more sense to me in text, since Pd is the only programming language I've ever used that is graphical. The bottom line is that when I think of an algorithm, it's a textual structure; if I'm using Pd I then have to translate that, which is a PITA.
I had a bunch of other problems with Pd, but I think recent work has largely remedied them (thank God (or whichever developer actually did the work) for the new GOP work). And data-structures have matured a bunch too, and look neat.
I've considered various solutions to scripting Pd, including using Pd to write some sort of PDP video server, that then I could control using Lisp and OSC. I'd prefer a pre-rolled solution. Packet-forth may be the best solution, since I know it does everything I want. I guess Aymeric et al. have some emails coming...
Thanks!
Thanks much, Ian

If you think in Java, then try to write C, you will have very similar
frustrations. Pd works quite different than procedural programming,
so thinking in that way while trying to program in Pd will be a
hinderance for sure.
