Hi all,
"Lynching" since about 1870 has commonly been understood in the U.S. to mean "extrajudicial killing of blacks for such offenses as associating with whites of the opposite sex". I'd suggest getting off this topic which brings back bad memories for some.

Actually I didn't know that - I for one just think of "lynching" as synomynous with "beating". Then again, I could just be an ignorant, racist, American ;-)

my dictionary says "to put to death (as by hanging) by mob action without legal sanction"
which is also always how I've seen the word used
and that's a bit more than just beating up.

Right you are, although since it the word is rarely used in its literal sense, it doesn't actually matter much whether it means to be "beat up" or to be "killed".
The only important question I think, is whether this term is offensive to blacks in the US or elsewhere. I hope we can get some opinions to this question (especially from US brothers!) posted on this list. (OT I know, yes, yes, but still...)

hehe, I'm sorry, but are you implying that there is some Linux music software that in its present state is not a pain in the rear?
If so, do you have a day job, or do you get to play with this stuff full-time? (I guess the latter)

Sorry. RTFD: PD is not an acronym, unless everyone is pronouncing it as "pidhh", "puddy", or some other equally pimply-faced prounounciation. (Then again, who knows, hardcore geeks can acronymize almost any combination of consonants).
If you just say "Peedee", then it's not an acronym.
Larry
Well the definition of acronym is a matter of great contention and by a lot of dictionary definitions PD is an acronym.
The confusion, I believe, comes from a simplistic understanding of what a word actually is. 'PD', however, does come under most dictionary definitions of a word.
The argument of whether an initialism is an acronym is a very large - debated - can of worms.

BTW: In the official docs it is written "Pd" not "PD", so it must be a regular word (from one of those languages that don't use vowels in its written form).
