hi martin, you should do: 1- make 2- sudo make install otherwise everything seems to be fine with your config, it should work actually.

that's because there is no bin directory. do: mkdir ../bin (before compiling)

hi martin and mik
i was not really aware, that netpd does not work at all on 0.38. i never seriously used 0.38 myself, because i had a lot of problems with complex guis (especially when created dynamically, the same issue in chat.pd now). so i jumped from 0.37 to 0.39. suddenly it seems, that 0.38 is the 'most available' version. it's not *only* lazyness from my side :-) , that i recommend what you have done: compile 0.39 yourself. there are already some patches made for netpd, which only work with 0.39, since they use [spigot 1] or [list]. that means, even if i could solve the problems of netpd with 0.38/0.37, some patches wouldn't work.
i'm sorry, that there is no better solution at the moment. i hope 0.39 will get the standard version soon ([list] should be reason enough :-)

hi martin
i never had this error myself. i just installed ubuntu on my pc-laptop and netpd works (pd crashes sometimes when runnig as root and with jack). so it's hard to say what might be the reason for this behaviour in your case. from my experience with pd, i noticed that pd sometimes has problem when doing much things on patch loadtime. in case of _chat.pd, chat tries to read the file netpd-settings.txt on loadbang and creates one if there isn't any. if there is one, it reads it and sets all the guis in _chat.pd to the corresponding appearance. if you like, you can meet me at #dataflow and we could try some things like setting a delay after [loadbang] or so.

hi Roman,
sorry, i didn-t report this in time, but x@lo-res.org and me found out that somehow netpd-settings.txt was missing on my computer. after copying this file, netpd opened so this is actually solved.

hi martin
cool, that you and ck could solve the problem. on the other hand it's bad, that your _chat.pd did not create a netpd-settings.txt automatically. the idea of it is, that you can keep your customized settings after updating netpd. but if this leads to problems like you had (not creating a netpd-settings.txt, if there isn't any), this 'comfort' loses its reason. can you check if _chat.pd had write-permission in the dir you installed netpd?
i hope to join you soon in netpd for a first SOUNDsession.
cheers roman
