Hi,
How can I play MIDI sounds from PD in OSX? It is necessary to have another MIDI software running? Can I just play General MIDI from PD?
Cheers,

Pd is not a MIDI-synthesizer.
you can:
MIDI-routing your system provides to get MIDI from one app to another)
are truely lazy, there's an object called [fluid~] that let's you import soundfonts...

to be more precise: i meant that you can build your own software synthesizer in Pd (you can also build your own hardware synthesizer, if you like to)
and [fluid~] is an external by frank barknecht, so it doesn't come with Pd-vanilla (and i don't know whether it comes with Pd-extended; afair it is flext based and there seem to be still no flexternals in pd-ext) but i guess somebody has already compiled it for osx....)

The easiest way that I know of is to set up an IAC loopback device (http://www.spectrasonics.net/news/Creating-an-IAC-Bus.html) , use that as your MIDI out in PD, and then open up Garage Band.

Pd is not a MIDI-synthesizer.
you can:
- generate MIDI data and send it to a MIDI-synthesizer (using whatever
MIDI-routing your system provides to get MIDI from one app to another)
- build your own synthesizer which could be controlled by MIDI. if you

there is a wrapper application which lets you use the general midi
instruments in quicktime
http://notahat.com/simplesynth/
it's only 204 KB big. this is the simplest solution afaik.

Hi there
I would like to mention a hint that helped myself some time ago
have a look at "midifile", which is part of mrpeach externals...
Which does not play midi-sounds but midifiles....to be exact.
Do you just want to play midisounds ? or generate midinotes, maybe ??
And of course there is the wonderful object "mtof" that converts midi- notes to frequnecies and thus you can play midifiles or midinotes with any selfmade oscillator/ synthesizer....
I had a lot of fun playing with midifiles and
"polywavesynth" for example
Cheers Luigi
