Hello
I usually work on Linux, but I have to demo a patch on a Mac. In this patch, I use a few objects from the Iemlib (also Iem_t3) and from the Zexy library. I can't find any OS X installer featuring both these libraries. I didn't see any separate Mac versions of these libraries either. Is there a solution ? (besides making a C++ or Max/MSP version of my patch)
thank you very much, -j
There are quite a few externals inthe OSX installer. So the problem is not that the externals aren't there, just that they aren;t documented a sbeing there. I think both zexy and iemlib stuff are there. i guess you can try and see.
speaking of this OSX installer, is it just me or are other people really annoyed with the new drop down "help" menu in this version. If you are looking for a specifc file in a folder, like in 5.reference, it takes forever and a day to scroll there!

no it is not just you. on the other hand having a place to find all installed objects (if each of them got a help patch) is quite a good thing. especially for newbies. it is a sad thing that most help patches do not feature a library name otherwise ordering them would be easy - there is also no mechanism where it should be stored beside doing so in the filename (or directory structure).
so: if you can think of a solution on how it works better you are sure welcome to propose it. until then hcs did the best possible.

Yes, of course, it is inconvienient that there's no way of knowing which library the objects come from. This namespace debate is taking on relgious proportions in some circles. But, the main thing which I found a PITA was simply that the "help" menu didn't open up a normal file-browsing window anymore, but tried to make a scrollable dropdown of all the files there. In which case, I would simply suggest to return to the older model, which is *slightly* more usable [but not much ;-) ]
OTOH, if the help files were organized into folders [as Zexy, PDP, GEM and some others sometimes do, albeit inconsistantly in different cases], it would make the scrolling easier. But if the user doesn't know which Lib it comes from, it is just as unusable. The other problem is with paths, which have to be set no matter what installer is used. For new users, this really creates a lot of confusion!
Just thinking about this a bit after two workshops of 12-15 PD newbies, which are about 75% OSXers with their own laptops, and having to do new installs with all of them.

This menu is far from ideal, but Apple recently made it so that you can't open a normal file browser if the directory is inside an .app wrapper. Its a bummer. Therefore, the cascasing menus.
Organizing by library is a bad idea, I think, since most of the library names have no logical organizing principle except the person who wrote the objects.
I am open to suggestions as to how the Help menu could be done better.
Miller did a kludge using symbolic links to get the old behavior
working, but I think it'll be troublesome in the long run, so we should
figure something out, hopefully something that applies to all platforms
well.

I forgot to add one thing: now that Miller has figured out how to get
the old OS file browser working, it would be quite simple to include
both the file browser and the cascasing menu on the Help menu. I'll do
that with my next release, once 0.38 final is released by Miller.

thanks, but which installer are you talking about exactly ? I haven't tried the Mac version featured on Miller Puckette's site, maybe it's this one. I only have to find a Mac again for testing ;) I only use a few objects from these libraries but unfortunately I can't replace them.

millers is purely pd afaik. hcs version did/surely does include zexy and a lot of iem stuff (0.38-0test4) - i can't see any version of iemlib, though. can it be that you simply don't load zexy?

I think, Hans builds iemlib as single externals, which effectivly avoids a lot of nameclash problems and works very well. CVS is set up to do the same, it's great.

iemlib and zexy are included in every MacOS X package I've put out.
iemlib is built as single objects now, but I haven't tested them all,
so some might not work properly

I precisely downloaded the two lasts os x installers from Hans yesterday (0.37 and test0.38). When opening my patch, the zexy objects were not recognized (by any version). The Iemlib is only integrated in the 0.38 version, but it's possible that the iem_t3 objects didn't work (sorry, I don't remember exactly about t3, and I personnaly don't have a Mac for testing it).

Sounds like you need to add this line to your ~/.pdrc file:
-lib zexy
And if you are using 0.37, you need these lines too:
-lib iemlib1 -lib iemlib2 -lib iem_t3_lib
And if you don't know about the ~/.pdrc, the FAQ will tell you more:

I have an absraction that contains an array. Every time I load more than one absraction I get warnings due to the arrays being the same name, of course I could manually change the array names within each abstraction, but is there an easier way to do this? Cheers, Rory.

Besides using $0, there are some other tricks, epsc if you want to be able to use [soundfiler] to load different files to each, in the case of an audio array. I had trouble using two different $n variables in one message, so I cooked up the following patch as an example of how to do it. Call it as an abstraction, and you shold be able to load diffreent sounds to each array.

Hhm, what troubles did you have with various $n's? I changed your patch a bit and here the [read -resize $1 $2( message gets filled and executed correctly.
