Hi HC,
I just tried out the latest Extended installer. I like the new look and was hoping for more stability.
But I ran into a big problem...I can't load any of the videos I used to. All are mov files with photoJPG compression. Not only in the latest version, but in all the other versions of PD I have installed. I could have sworn I used them in the new PD release last night, but today nothing works!
I'm downloading the test4 DMG again, since that's the last "trustworthy" version I used, and hopefully it will fix the problem.
But I'm interested in how the video codecs are loaded, it doesn't seem so transparent since there's nothing in the settings or paths to determine what set of codecs are used. Where are they stored on OS X, and how is it that a newer version of PD can nuke the codecs for the other versions?
d.
OK, this really isn't funny. There's no way to play the videos that worked yesterday in PD on any version today.
error: GEM: pix_movie: Couldn't open the movie file: 2_1.movミ( (-2020) GEM: pix_film: Loaded file: /Volumes/one/derek/baruch/pd/../video/2_1.mov with 0 frames (0x0)
I deleted all previous versions of PD, reinstalled test4 (last known somewhat-stable version) and replaced the Preferences file. I even deleted PDP from the startup just to be certain that it's codecs are interfering with GEM. And rebooted to make sure nothing was hanging around in the system memory.
Still no luck.
Let this be a lesson to NEVER EVER EVER upgrade versions in the middle of a project.
Suggestions on how to get my codecs back are welcome.

on os-x Gem should use QuickTime (only, per default), and all codecs supported by QuickTime. this should not interfere with anything pdp uses (so you can safely re-install pdp/pidip)
what does the Gem version string say? what does it say when creating the first [pix_movie] file (e.g. which libs is it using?)
can you try using one of the Gem-binaries found at http://gem.iem.at ?

This is all it says, unfortunately, even in -verbose mode.

Will do, be right back...

Error -2020 means Quicktime was not initialized which is not really possible on a properly functioning OSX system. The binary could be built incorrectly so try another one.
HI Chris, IOhannes,
I've tried the binaries gem-0.90.0-OSX-G4-bin and gem-CVS20070605-OSX-G5 as well as various Extended installers.
Mac specs are 10.4.10, 1.67 GHz PPC G4 2 GB DDR SRAM
No software updates besides the newest PD Extended were installed between yesterday, when [pix_film] worked, and today, when [pix_film] doesn't.
Built-in Quicktime plays the clips fine. I've also tried moving and renaming the clips with no positive results. Same clips have been copied to another machine where [pix_film] plays them there.
I'm completely stumped. How else can I test if Quicktime is working right on my machine? Should I reinstall that as well? Am I right in understanding that PD simply calles the Quicktime which is loaded on the system already?

This means that you are loading a Gem that is not included in the Pd- extended installer. The rc4 one would look something like this:

Sounds like you are using an old version of Gem. I you trash ~/
Library/Preferences/org.puredata.pd.plist, then it'll use the default
embedded preferences, and load the internal versions of Gem and PDP.

Well, I've gotten it to load the binaries from the GEM site (including CVS) already, and they didn't work either.
I was using Quicktime 7.1, just tried updating to 7.2 and I get all the same error.
Quicktime seems to be functioning fine, it's just how PD accesses it. I really don't understand...

No, I didn't. Thanks Chris, now I know neither me or my laptop is crazy.
I should have thought of this after years of teaching people they need to open X11 to use PDP. I guess the idea is about the same...
Everything appears to be in order now.

chris clepper wrote:

I could change this to allow loading before window creation, but the general idea is that you need a window to do anything so create that first.
On 7/24/07, Derek Holzer derek@umatic.nl wrote:
Maybe a better idea would be to include this in the help file of [pix_film] so that people know about it. Forgive me if it's in a doc somewhere already, but I never recalled seeing this piece of info anywhere.
But besides documenting it, I can't really see what purpose it serves to have that error if it could be changed otherwise. People know they need a window before they can see anything, anyway, and it's not like the error it throws says "make a gemwin first, dummy!" ;-)
I could see this having problems if you had either an installation or a performance patch which autoloaded clips, perhaps before the window was created simply because the order of operations wasn't specific enough.
Just my 2cents after a rather frustrating day ;-) best, d.
