Hi buddies ! Maybe I should not post this into this list, but I'm getting crazy tryng to decide which laptop to buy in order to get (debian) linux and pd working perfectly.
If someone could give any kind of help about it I would appreciate it very much. Of course one of my main needs is to have linux working with all of the system devices (net, usb, X + accel/OpenGL(to use GEM)) and definetely PD.
One possible target is a Dell Latitude (Dell says they support linux for this line of laptops and it is supposed that everything should work under linux with those, but I'd like to confirm some way (if possible), that it's true and that I won't be fighting against it (and them) in order to have everything up and running. The video card might be an Ati Mobility Radeon 7500 or 9000 (i beleive) but I understand acceleration is not yet supported under linux for this cards, so the alternative is an nVidia w/64mb which seems to work (also would like to confirm).
I'm sorry if this message bothers someone out there but I really need some help about it and I guess it might be of help for other users (probably).
If someone could recommend me any kind of solution (even posting this at any other list or whatever) I will be very happy. If direct help could be provided it would be great !
Any feedback welcome ! Thank you, guys. cya Rama.
hi rama! i personally use a dell inspiron (debian only) and i'm quite happy with this machine. the european version of the inspiron laptop has nvidia graphic chips, which are good, but you have to use closed source drivers.
there is a lot of good ressources at http://linux-laptop.net/ also http://mobilix.org/ has some useful informations.

Hi,
I run Pd on an inspiron 4100 under windows Xp and debian. It's ok, not got MIDI to work yet under debian, and can't get the alsa mixer to let me record/sample into pd. Also, beware that the thing does 'irq sharing' in a big way, which led to a major clicking problem when using a usb audio interface (to the point that I've given up with it). Don't know if this is irq sharing problem in general, or with the 3Com network card on the same irq, or the ATI Radeon on the same irq (!!).
So I'm mainly using pd under windoze with midi from a MOTU fastlane and onboard sound (not too bad for o/p, dreadful for i/p).

i have the intel8x0 chip got it working fine with Alsa and pd with the usb-audio (midiman) this is on a vaio laptop grx 560 with 512MB ram 1.8 GHZ with the radeon. redhat 7.3 i am not sure about debian, though but clicking audio is irq stacking
once the kernel is patched for acpi and swsuss all the IRQs work fine (even got the conexant modem to work) ..currently researching wireless for campus performances... our wireless is not multicast
i have not tested GEM yet but i had async errors with SGI performer which is really what i wanted working
sorry for the long OT

Greetings:
I'm running PD on a lowly PII 366 in an HP Omnibook 4150. It's great, runs very well under ALSA, but of course I can't really use the GEM stuff (the video is underpowered in this machine).
Otherwise, I'm very pleased with the machine and with PD. :)

There's a great list just for that stuff: linux-audio-user See http://www.djcj.org/
In general, practically every laptop that runs Linux with X is also able to run PD. Depending on your 3D needs you may need to look for support the chipset of your graphics card.

Radeon is definitely not supported (acceleration), but dell laptops are definitely easier to work with in Debian than some others. Watch out for on-board sound modules (especially the i810), unless you're getting the RME hammerfall pcmcia goodness...

hi david ! interesting to know Dell laptops are easier than others to work with debian at least. I'll have to check further about the sound chip for this machines (inspiron and latitude), but I'd also be interested to know about that pcmcia for RME. I do not own an RME (I have a DSP24 and a DSP2000 from Hoontech) but a friend's got one and I might try it. Any url to check about that pcmcia thing ?
Thanks, bye. .rama.

haven't got one either, but there is a 'geiger driver' for it, if you can afford it. I've seen it perform and it is niiiice.
