On the LAU list I heard some great "pad" sounds being made with ZynAddSubFX a few months back, and I'd love to be able to make similar kinds of sounds using Pure Data. Does anyone have pointers to articles or tutorials on making nice pad sounds?

I think that detuned sawtooth waveforms is a good place to start.

Quite so. And somewhat connected to the ongoing thread on tuning scales Chuckk Hubbard inspired me to experiment with using ratios to create the separation parameters. Download my Sparkle synth and rip out the [phasorbank] unit. It has four inputs, a pitch base, two ratio inputs (numerator and denominator) and a fine tune offset. If you supply simple integer ratios, like 13/16, 20/21 or whatever, you will obtain extremely rich pad sounds with interesting harmonic spectrums. The twist comes when you detune these by a very small amount and obtain slowly shifting patterns where harmonics pop out in sequences. Risset created a couple of pieces based on these effects of microtonal detuning, only with sines. I discovered a similar, perhaps better, effect based on this "diffraction" occurs when you sweep a narrow bandpass filter over the output of the phasorbank, you get interesting scales emerging.

I can't find the [paf~] external. It is not in the CVS.

Paf~ was included in the main build until recently, I think that IRCAM was giving Miller some flack, since they own a "copyright" on the algorithm.

I've just realised the phasorbank in that patch isn't the one I thought it was and won't behave as I described above. Should be inspiring to making general pads sounds thpugh.

Sounds great. So basically in the case of 13/16 I should multiply the base frequency by 16 and then divide by 13? What does the fine tune offset do?

That's backwards. You multiply the base by 13 and divide by 16.
The tune offset helps to create the psychoaccoustic (and mathematical) phenomenon called beating (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beat_(acoustics) ).
This technique is also used by orchestras, when the various violins in a section will slightly detune their individual instruments to create a thicker texture. So you can see how this would make sense, since pad sounds are often an attempt to mimic a strings section.

Some, but not in a very presentable form, want to help develop them into something? 3 models, plucked, hammered and bowed, and three methods, KS, scanned, and additive. Best to focus on just one instrument at a time and build a very good version. What about piano? It's an easy model to understand - hammered string in wooden resonator, but it's a hard exercise to make it sound any good.
