Trying to get GEM to work with ubuntu Breezy...
From the binary Gem from the Breezy repo I get from Pd:
/usr/lib/pd/extra/Gem.pd_linux: /usr/lib/pd/extra/Gem.pd_linux: undefined symbol: vorbis_info_clear Gem: can't load library
I downloaded the Source from sourceforge and compiled. Now with the new Gem.pd_linux I get from Pd:

you need libxxf86vm-dev installed
Gem's configure checks for the existance of this package, but does not refuse to compile if it is missing; this is due to the fact, that with earlier versions of X (probably just with XFreee86, but i cannot remember exactly - ask a packager) libxxf86vm-dev was part of Xlibs-dev (so it was there anyhow)
as for the vorbis_info_clear error i would file a bugreport at ubuntu (that's the drawback when you (like the ubuntu-team) take packages from debian's unstable branch and just release it without further research)

did what you said. Installed the libxxf86vm-dev library. Built from the CVS sources. Now Pd tells me:

Please, if somebody can help me get Gem going on ubuntu Breezy or point me to an existing binary that works, I'd really appreciate it. when I compile, make a deb, try to install from the CVS, the deb file is created fine. When I dpkg it:
john@Dell-D600:~/Desktop/installs/Gem/cvs$ sudo dpkg -i gem_0.90.cvs14122005-1_i386.deb (Reading database ... 112012 files and directories currently installed.) Package libmagick++6 is not installed. gem depends on libavifile-0.7c2; however: Package libavifile-0.7c2 is not installed. dpkg: error processing gem (--install): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Errors were encountered while processing: gem

If I try to run Pd with Gem anyway, I get the error I already mention below.

seems like your magick++-package is called libmagick++6c2 instead of libmagick++6 (as dpkg assumes), similar for libavifile.
change the line10 in debian/control to Depends: ${shlibs:Depends}, pd | puredata, libtiff4, libjpeg62, libmagick++9c2a | libmagick++6 | libmagick++6c2, libmpeg3-1, libquicktime1 | libquicktime4linux0, libavifile-0.7c2 | libavifile-0.7, libdv4
note to myself: there must be a better way for dependencies. consult the debian manual.

that's a problem with your openGL-driver. configure Gem with "--without-ARB" (obviously you're build will lack of ARB-extensions, like shader-support; but you cannot do much about it, since your openGL-driver does not support it)
note to myself: split the current ARB-test into test for ARB and a test for shaders. make the tests more aggressive (not only compiling/linking but also executing) note to myself: time for glew
if you want to build debian-packages that way, you will have to modify the configure-flags in debian/rules accordingly

Seems to me the binary included with Steiner's latest release causes the pidip error in the subject line.
I'm figuring the fonts are there but located in a different directory on ubuntu Breezy than they were on Steiner's machine when he compiled. So perhaps the right symbolic link would fix the problem. If I knew where Steiner's distro kept its TTF fonts, I could give this a shot.
Short of that, I'd probably have to rebuild from the sources, which I'd like to avoid if there is an easier fix.
I'm pretty much a newbie with externals and I'm no Linux expert, so if I'm way off on the diagnosis, apologies.
Thanks!

I build on Debian using the PiDiP defaults except for --with-pd= and
--with-pdp=. I think actually that PiDiP has hard-coded font paths.

errr, the 'make install' from PiDiP does install a font in cp fonts/* /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF
which must be a true type font.
but, anyway, why people want to use PiDiP it it's a copy of effectv ( the worst insinuation ) and not even free?

ubuntu Breezy:
just compiled gem2pdp from the source. Compilation was fine and the externals seem to load OK. Pd command window reports gem2pdp 0.6 loading fine. However, I can't get the gem2pdp.pd help patch to produce the expected results. It appears that the gem2pdp object's outlet does not contain data or something. I just get a black screen in the PDP window. No errors are reported in the Pd command window or the Linux command line. If it makes a difference, I had to switch video output on PDP from pdp_xv to pdp_glx. I can see CPU usage shooting up in the patch when I am rendering in Gem, so something is supposed to be happening. Since I can get pdp_noise to output to a pdp window, I know the basic PDP output mechanism is working.
Part of why this is such an issue for me is just trying to get video files to play. I can't seem to find a way to convert my videos into a format that pdp or pidip likes. Gem plays 'em fine. If anybody has tips for me on this (good utilities etc.), I'd appreciate it.
Experimentation has been with the included help-gem2pdp.pd patch in the reference section of the documentation.
BTW I am also confused about why pdp_XV doesn't work. xvideo output works fine in other programs, such as vlc. xvinfo reports nothing unusual. pdp_xv reports that it can't create the window.
I had to compile from the source because the gem2pdp/pdp2gem binaries in the Breezy repo crash Pd.
Pd 0.38.4 Gem from latest CVSs compiled with -disable-ARB
Thanks in advance,

ola,
nice report...
well, to rea your video files, the simplest would be to use pdp_live~ if you have a pidip compiled with support for ffmpeg ( the debian package does ).
you can also convert them to theora with ffmpeg2theora and use pdp_theorin~, but both these solutions would be CPU greedy, the prefered format for PDP is still quicktime/photo JPEG...
for your pdp_xv not working, what does 'xvinfo' says ? if the number of ports is >0, i don't have any rational explanation..

your pdp_xv issue is a graphical driver problem, you have to fix your X configuration. pdp_glx is slower for bigger resolutions.

you should read the quicktimes with pdp_qt, not pdp_live~, to sum up :

hi,
i have the same kindof problem with my readeon 9250 and the fglrx drivers (ubuntu) when using my tv tuner card.
with "fglrx" drivers any tv program (zapping, xawtv, tvtime) says my card/driver doesnt support overlay mode...
with "readeon" drivers this problem dissappers and i can watch my tv shows as usual...
looks my next card will be nvidia again...
terveisin -andre
ps. sorry for the late answer, but it didnt help anyway

hello all,
here i have a readeon as well, and overlay works just fine, for example with my dvb-s card. you need to set the propper options in the XF86Config file. here is what modules i load and my section for the ati card. currently i have dga disabled in my config. also, the values for the bus-id are probably not right for you. if you use the install routine from the fglrx driver, this will be added according to your setup.

btw, if you only want to use Gem as a pix-source, the object you will need is more likely [pix_2pdp] (it will cost less). (you can do with the most tiny Gem window then and you won't need anything like [pix_texture] and a Geo is in this case: this should save you a lot of performance, if your gfx-card is not hw-accelerated)

Thanks in advance,
-John
