Is there anything like Hyperterminal on Linux?
I'm testing my microcontroller based interfaces and want to check the data. It's all working fine with the comport object, but it's just for testing purposes....

I read:

Forgot to say: for modem/serial line diagnostics minicom is quite good.
depending on what you're trying to do I'm a huge fan of kermit, but probably cat > /dev/ttySn in one window and cat /dev/ttySn in another does the trick anyway.

You actually were able to use Hyperterminal to debug serial protocols on a Microsoft development platform? Ouch, does that thing even have a hex display? Last time I tried it, it didn't even have an option to display control characters.
If I'm on a machine running Microsoft Windoes , I find it easier to run Procomm in a DOS box. Much more powerfull and you get scripting too. I've also run across a couple of shareware or demoware Microsoft Windowsprograms that are more geared towards engineering purposes - the log is time-stamped for example.
Sorry I can't answer your actual question - I can only hope of course that there are much better things available on Linux (like "ask" for example?)

I wonder whether there is a PD list for beginners, or whether anyone would like to start one? I feel a bit overwhelmed by the level of this list, I want to ask some stupid questions. Cheers, Ivan

but then we would have a list that wouldn't actually get read by the people who know how to answer the questions. and we would spend most of the time directing people from list list to the 'newbie' list, instead of just helping them out.
this isn't a particularly high volume list, so just ask away.
if it makes you feel less self conscious, put 'dumb question' in the subject line ;)

plus, take heart in that most of the old farts on this list learned PD by asking lots and lots of "dumb questions" of the even *older* farts... so noone should feel bad about asking for help around here.

Actually I still remember my stupid first question here 4 years ago quite well: "How can I change the Font size?" or so. And guess who answered first: MSP himself! I still believe, that this has made me stay.

please feel free to ask any question as stupid (or intelligent) as you like. furthermore, a lot of questions have been asked already on this list (with various levels of expertice), and you might try to search the list-archives prior to posting your question (i have to admit, it might be tiresome to answer the same question each and every 3 months...) relevant links are http://iem.at/mailinglists/pd-list/ (the original but slow search-interface) and (for faster search, as they have *big* server-farms) http://google.com/search?q=+++++++pd-list+OR+pd-ot+OR+pd-dev+site%3Aiem.at+

unlike on other mailing lists (eg. the kernel mailing list) this list is a big help for both basic and advanced users. i can't remember any beginner's question that has not been answered (maybe with a link to the relevant posting in the archive). anyway, the archive _is_ a great source for information, that's why i'd suggest (sorry if i repeat myself) to make if available as mbox files ... for the people, who don't have a slow dialup connection and have to ask their roommates to stop talking to their boyfriends in order to search on the web ;-)
cheers....

If it'll make you feel better, I'll start:
How do I change the font size of comments?

(deja vu...)
You cannot change the font size nor the width of a standard comment (the Ctl-5 one). There is however the [comment] object in Cyclone.
Of these you can change font size, color and face. I don't know if this is possible after you created the object but you can give arguments to the comment to specify its appearance like:
[comment width pxsize fontface]
Example:
This creates a 20px-Helvetica-comment with automatic size (width=0):
[comment 0 20 Helvetica]
Have fun.
