yes, thanx! someone said they're using a p-200 and it works fine; so far i've tried it on an Indy and a p-100 with 24M RAM. The p-100 is pretty sluggish (window draws and cursor movements were really slow when i had 2 patches open at once, cos.pd and fm.pd, i think). However, it actually never crashed whereas the Indy dumped core a few times...
btw, roughly how many pd users are there? does anyone have an idea?
thanx again,

Hi !
There are 75 mailing list subscribers. Some of them wonŽt do any work with pd, others who do are probably not subscribed. Actually I would like to see the list getting more a forum for "pd users" than for "pd linux installers". So feel free to ask any question or request which comes to your mind during pd usage. Additionally if someone has some thnigs to share with others, (externals, patches ...) we could set up a site for pd resources.

hu list!

;)) - maybe we should just rename the list?

joink.
whats on my mind rihgt now isnothing new, i just want to raise it again:
well, it would be sufficient "just" to have the sfread obj. support mp3 format and i think for decoding there's various libraries available, so i shouldnt be too diffcult to get this running. for encoding, i guess its a bit more hairy, but if one could parallely to going into dac~ pipe the signal into an mp3-net-out object, so other pd's running on (inter)networked machines could catch the mpeg stream., wui ... i m not sure, but i assume that for doing this, one would still need some kind of an mpeg-stream dispenser (i.e. a server) which could divert one stream to various clients, which could run external to pd ..
guenther, you mentioned that idea to me a while ago .. and i still think it would be absolutely great to be able to run pd without graphical interface. my hinter-thoughts in this are that i ve got a bunch of machines available on our network, some of them without video and/or soundcards. so if i load a patch on these running in background and sending their output signal onto the net rather than /dev/dsp it would offer great possibilites and almost endless processing resources ...
so let know the pro's comments on this, maybe somebody has other ideas to achieve the same and i d like to hear those ...
also , do you think its good to have a "central" site on which to dump patches/externals/abstractions to share (and to start off with) (which would raise various questions of administration and uptodateness) compared to have different user-sites where people just post their private sutff and get their urls on the list ... so if there will be a central site, it should only contain sort of tested and approved extensions and macros etc ... but anyway, somebody would have to take care of it ..

The problem is, either the decoders are not free, or they perform really badly. I still have to put some work into optimizing. I havenŽt released the sfread external yet (It definitely won't work on NT). If someone wantŽs to give it a try, it's at ftp://gige.epy.co.at/pub/gige/sound/pd/externs

sounds really cool ... but probably too specific ....
- pd in daemon mode.

Well, thatŽs already possible (at least with the unix version that uses X Windows). Just set the DISPLAY variable to the system where your display is and start the pdŽs from the different machines. If you donŽt want the GUI, just hide it.

You are right. I started to make a new "pd homepage", but IŽm rather unexperienced with HTML. So if you like to help me, you are welcome.

so, does that mean you have already started work on implementing mpeg code in sfrad? ;) or do you ean optimizing sfread generally?

what i mean here is: if there would be an mp out external you could send the stream to a specific port and if then a client connects to this port, it will be bound and no other cleints will be able connect. so one would need either as above an external mp-server you send the stream to or programm an mpegserver in pd which listens on one port for rewuests and splits each request off to any other free port ... std serving procedure ... but i wouldnt know exactly how this could be done
ok, generally, is there currently a way to get a signal transmitted over tcpip network (assuming sufficient bandwidth)?

yep, sure. i just thought about having a mode without ANY interface so you might just get free some more resources, otherwise "wasted" on tk interface ... but thats in fact just a minor point ...

well, i dont think it matters too much at this stage what the page looks like and as long as you can get out a textfile and dont make typos in the links all is fine ... of course, still i can assist with html .. ;) -- but i think its just good to have many "user" pages because any attempt at an "official" page is probably doomed to inactivity and out of datedness... maybe just slowly start to develop sort of a meta-navigation to all the private pages (hm, theres in fact not that many at the mom.) when we see which of them evolve in a "useful" way and stay online in a stable manner...ö.
.., please comment (especially if you feel i m talking garbage).. bst, os

Yes, I already have working code for mpeg ....
... but i wouldnt know exactly how this could be done

Mhmm, yes something like netsend~ and netreceive~, yes ... actually I thought it is there, but I canŽt find it ... but this should be easy to implement.. except this will add quite a bit of delay to the signal ...

It will be useful to have the GUI around, because otherwise youŽd have to put special effort into programming the patches for "Net usage"

is this a mirror of how much users there are ?

if it would have been garbage, I wouldnŽt have commented :D
