I have added a couple of new objects to my library:
prob - generates random events with a given probability
monorhythm - basic rhythm pattern building block that allows polyrhthms to
be generated quickly and easily
you can download it from:

I like your monorhythm thingie, and I found myself playing with it for about an hour, without recognizing how time has passed ;) Also the metroplus, which I didn't know before, is a nice idea.
If only there would be a linux makefile. I did compile each external by hand, had to delete some #includes, but I could not build the whole library under linux. Maybe a Makefile-wizard could help, as your objects are really useful, even as single externals.

I've been using PD under windoze but have just successfully configured my laptop to dual boot XP and RH7.2 Linux. I'm eager to get PD running under Linux. I'm a total Linux newbie so I may be doing something stupid. I'd appreciate any help you can provide. RH7.2 is using the 2.4.7-10 kernel. I downloaded PD (.34 ) as an rpm and rpm'd it with the -i option. When I type pd my machine freezes. I know it is starting because it is telling me I have no midi in or out. I can't even escape with ctrl alt del . The message I get is: Oops :0000 EIP: 0010: [<c98ffcca>] EFLAGS: 00010246 etc etc.
At the end of the message: <0> kernel panic:Aiee, killing interrupt handler! In interrupt handler-not syncing
Then nothing happens. I have to push the power switch to reboot. Do I have to upgrade my kernel? Any suggestions? Thanks! Jim

Its hard to say but my first guess is a faulty sound card driver. Have you sucessfully tested other apps with audio input/output? Or... try starting PD with -nodac -noadc.
later. andy
Hmm. I tried running PD with -noadc and -nodac . Now my computer doesn't crash, just that specific window. I can ctrl alt F3 to another session. The message I get now is:
Application Initialization failed no display name no $Display environment variable.
Any further thoughts? Jim

That means that the PD gui cannot connect to the X display
try "export DISPLAY=":0"
are you running PD as root and X as a normal user?

From my personal opinion:
#1 don't use redhat - it's given me nothing but trouble, yet the debian machine works great. #2 don't install from RPN, compile from source instead. (don't try this if you insist on using redhat)

Thanks everyone for the help . PD now runs when I use -noadc -nodac, it also runs with just -nodac , it also runs with -noadc and I get sound, BUT not if I use both audio input and output. Puzzling ! So is the next step to install the Alsa drivers? How can I check to see what audio drivers my RH7.2 is currently using? Oh ya and duhh I was starting PD outside of and X window. Chris was asking why I'm changing to Linux for PD from Windows. I expect I'll get better performance and stability under Linux. Also it appears that things come out here first in Linux and eventually in windows. Jim

Do you happen to be using native audio on an Intel i810 or 815 motherboard? If so, full duplex audio crashed Linux under OSS, and I think I crashed it the one time I tried it under Alsa too... the solution is to buy a separate soundcard. (I8x0 audio is terrible quality anyway...)

i8x0 -is- a horrible audio card and does cause crashes... unfortunately he's on a laptop so there is little that can be done.
ALSA 0.9 works fine with the i8x0, however... even w/ full duplex.

Thanks Andy, I'll look into ALSA .9 . Can I test to see if I'm running full duplex when not in PD? I should be able to just plug a sound source into line in and if it comes out my laptop speakers, its running full duplex?? ciao, Jim

Yesterday I saw Linux running on the Sony Playstation 2.
Wondering how well that mught serve as PD platform..?

also good information on linuxdevices.com: http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS3628477348.html
which also points to nice Linux on DreamCast article: http://www.linuxdevices.com/articles/AT7466555948.html

I saw it yesterday too. I'd say the main things holding it back from being ported to the PS2 are TCL/TK and ALSA. If PS2/Linux 1.0 has decent ports of those, porting Pd should be trivial. The PS2 has decent quality audio outs, but more importantly, has S/PDIF out. I asked the guy at LinuxWorld about it, but he just kind of smiled and said "Yes" to everything. So I'll believe it when I believe it.
The bigger question in my mind is whether or not GEM will port to the PS/2... there's where the real win would be. Is it still the case that Mark, the principal author of GEM, writes games for the PS/2 platform?

I hope that Pd porting to PS2 so much.

I do not know much about Linux and PS2. But I think porting GEM is depend on Open GL. http://www.ps2linux.scea.com/ps2gl/index.html Here is Open GL like Library(but not the OpenGL) I hope this site is useful to develop.

ALSA wouldn't be neccessary, OSS support should be sufficient. Unfortunatly Dreamcast Linux doesn't have sound at all, as a DC is what I have here.
BTW: Did someone try something like the PSX-game "Vib Ribbon" with GEM and fiddle~ and bonk~? I'm thinking about this for some time now, but I'm no graphics guy.
And the proper name for such a PD project should be "Pit Dibbon [tm]" ;-)

Thanks Miller,
I'm running on a laptop so I'd have to get an external card. Yes I believe it is using intel drivers. The actual sound device is a Cirrus CS 4299 using an AC97 codec. When I run sndconfig it detects an Intel device. I wonder if I have to specify that it isn't Intel? Oh well chances are I won't be using adc and dac at the same time right now. I'll work on getting midi working. Thanks again. Jim
