Dear all,
recently a friend started using pd with his students in a japanese university.
it would be useful to be able to write comments in japanese when building tutorials for these students.
any ideas about how or wehther this might be done?
Most japanese tertiary students read english fairly well but it would be good to have the option in some cases.
Rod.
at least in windows, you can install new languages from the microsoft
disc. you can then switch between languages with a special keystroke, or with a little application that you can always have running in the system tray. in windows XP, go to Control Panel, then go to Regional and Language Options. i'm sure comments are just standard ascii text right? when you swith to a different language it only switches the keyboard layout and allows the special characters to be displayed. hope this helps,
scott

The problem is, that Japanese fonts aren't ASCII. They need more bits, IIR. I cannot even input german umlauts into a comment.
I wonder, if the .pd-fileformat can accept wide characters at all. So you have two problems: .pd-files and the tk interface. I think Rodney's friend's "gakusei" will have to transcribe the japanese comments to ASCII.

hi all,
I read:

but you can use umlauts in a canvas name + it should be reasonably trivial to patch canvas to have a japanese font option and use this to do comments in japanese (ugly hack I l know but ....)

canvases cannot have blank spaces... or is that possible? marius.

hi again,
seems like changing line 409 in g_rtext.c from
to
does the trick.
