for example I did pd -lib gem

What am I doing wrong?
pd and your filesystem are case-sensitive, the library is called "Gem" and not "gem".
try "pd -lib Gem"
if it still does not work, try "pd -verbose -lib Gem" and tell us what it says.

I've just learned this for Pd-extended: try putting an object called [import pmpd] in one of your open patches.
