I used Guenter Geiger's patch to get gem working on my x86_64 laptop so im not really sure of what gem is configured with. I was just going through the gem examples to see whats configured and I got the following errors:
24.time-filtering.pd pix_film:: quicktime4linux support pix_film:: libmpeg3 support GEM: pix_film: Loaded file: /usr/local/lib/pd/doc/gem/examples/04.pix/../data/alea.mpg with 31 frames (320x240) GEM: Start rendering pix_texture: not using client storage mpeg3video_seek: frame accurate seeking without a table of contents is no longer supported. Use mpeg3toc <mpeg file> <table of contents> to generate a table of contents and load the table of contents instead.
00.SimpleVideo.pd GEM: pix_video: do video for this OS
01.Text.pd Gem has been compiled without FONT-support !
03.ChangeText.pd Gives me a seg fault!
01.primQuad.pd doesnt seem to do anything
02.fountain.pd part_velsphere: this is obsolete, use [part_velocity sphere <x> <y> <z> <r>] instead
03.View_OSD.pd gives me a seg fault
I just post these either to report changes, or to get help reconfiguring my build of Gem. Thanks for the help! -thewade

so you have quicktime + mpeg3 (for which a quite old api is used, which gives the "frame accurate seeking" warning) this is perfectly the behaviour of all debian-packages.
00.SimpleVideo.pd GEM: pix_video: do video for this OS
no video support.
01.Text.pd Gem has been compiled without FONT-support !
this is a problem with gem's debian package too. i think that ftgl-dev is available vor amd64 too, so it shouldn't be a real problem (but rather a bug in the debian-package which i have already filed and günther is aware of (i hope))
03.ChangeText.pd Gives me a seg fault!
this is because of the non-FTGL support (everyone using deb-packages and that tried looking at aymeric's gem-flyer has noticed this behaviour) this is really a bug.
01.primQuad.pd doesnt seem to do anything
strange. does it give you any warnings like "compiled against openGL-1.0" ?
i don't think that the change to configure has to do something with this.
02.fountain.pd part_velsphere: this is obsolete, use [part_velocity sphere <x> <y> <z> <r>] instead
right. neither an error nor does it break something. it just says: "don't use [part_velsphere], use [part_velocity] instead"

the problem is, that i don't yet have (nor understand) günther's changes to the configure-script.
thanks for the reports.

There is a new version in unstable. Please test and report back. I also made some improvements to the build system showing the features actually compiled in after the configure step, and I have hopefully fixed the dv input stuff. Patch attached for Mr. thewade and the gem devel team. This time you have to do autoconf in order to generate configure before running configure.
