Dear list,
Does any of you know a good way to get a video stream, for example webcam from internet into pd? To be processed with GEM? I found a way via "camTwist", to capture screen from vlc into a vitual camera to use with [pix_video], but the quality is not so nice. How about quarts composer? Can i get frames from quartz composer to pd? How about syphon? Anyone experiences here?
Thanks in advance,
Johnny
hello,
if vlc can read the stream, then the VLC plugin in Gem will also read it. you just need a Gem version less than 1 year old, and the VLC plugin.

it's included in Gem. Yes, i think it is working in osX. but i have no idea if you can find a compiled version of Gem, or if you'll have to compile it yourself.
maybe Hans or Iohannes could answer that.
if you create a pix_video object, do you have something like (in pd log) :
[pix_video]: backend #4='vlc' : vlc

Hi, In pdp look for giss-pdp-osx or giss-pdp-v4l2, you must create an account in giss.tv....very easy to configure.
Best regards

Thanks for the answer, josé.
giss is quite cool i think, but here I try to get some videos/streams INTO pd not out.
VLC plugin to open everything VLC can open would be perfect. I will try to compile it, but for me it seems, like it is not included in the regular GEM 0.93.3 distro?!

I tried to compile it in the past under osx, but I still have the same error when launching pd:
[...] pattern : /Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/Resources/extra/Gem/gem_video*.so dylib loading file '/Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/Resources/extra/Gem/gem_videoDarwin.so'! dylib loading file '/Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/Resources/extra/Gem/gem_videoVLC.so'! library loading returned: dlerror 'dlopen(/Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/Resources/extra/Gem/gem_videoVLC.so, 2): Symbol not found: _libvlc_media_add_option Referenced from: /Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/Resources/extra/Gem/gem_videoVLC.so Expected in: flat namespace in /Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/Resources/extra/Gem/gem_videoVLC.so' [...]
I'd be glad to make it work! gem 0.93.git 6d584fa (26/09/12) vlc 2.0.4 osx 10.6.8
my command line to configure GEM compilation is: PKG_LIBVLC_CFLAGS=-I/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/include PKG_LIBVLC_LIBS="-L/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/lib -lvlc" ./configure --with-pd=/Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/Resources/include/pd/ --enable-fat-binary=i386 --with-ftgl-includes=/sw/include/ --with-libvlc-includes=-I/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/include --with-libvlc-libs="-L/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/lib -lvlc"
