With all these pd packages and installers popping up ...
Is there a logo for PD available. If not, what about a logo contest at pure-data.org ?

Good idea. I'd propose a bang with the letters "Pd" in it, like: ____ |(Pd)|
or somehow like that.
Btw: How is Pd spelled? I tend to use "Pd" as in the docs.

Hi all,
Here's my submission for a pd logo as a 128x128 gif.
Someone a bit better than I am at editing beziers might like to touch it up a bit, or just downsample it.
[/] Camoflauge colors give a sense of utility and functionality, with adventurousness and a bit of artistry thrown in. Camoflauge also hints at the chameloan nature of pd which can be used to make anything you like while blending in.
[/] Eastern motif reflects on the harmony/disharmony possible from pd, as well as the way in which it malleable nature models a the comsic dance of the universe.
[/] It spells Pd perfectly -- that's all it is, simplicity itself. A complete reduction into the fundamentals. The letters themselves are as pure unadorned data, sans-serif, and yet stylistic and suggesting there is deepness to be explored and discovered.
OK, toss out that last one. My vife explained to me all about how to lay out that glyph properly. No beziers involved -- it's 100% circles.
Here's it again, this time at 288 x 288 which enables nice results after downsamping.
Also showing it with two color schemes to consider:
I suggest the program logo by this glyph with a subtle 'badging' effect (anyone have such a filter?) and that documents be a standard document icon with a small version of this design near the center or so.

Using yin-yang for Pd is a cute idea, but when I saw this, I was at first only thinking of yin-yang and asked myself, what does this have to do with Pd. Reading your mail, which came second, revealed this similarity between the letters and the old symbol. Maybe this could be made a bit clearer, for example by re-introducing the serifs?

here's mine (done a while ago as you can see with the shading and coloured patch cord patches ;) , politically correct format, sort of an ok logo but hardly scales down to icon size.

Hi all,
OK, I have a design that I really think is fantastic and you're going to love. I came up with something that embodies the principles I stated before, but also combines them with the inspiration of others who have come up with icons from the program itself, as well as giving an extremely high-tech, yet artistic flavor.
Three color sets:
[/] The logo spells out the two letters Pd, placing them within an icon readily recognizable to Pd afficianados. Simplicity itself, it is a reduction into the fundamentals. The letters themselves are as pure unadorned data, sans-serif, and yet stylistic and suggesting there is deepness to be explored and discovered.
[/] Eastern influenced motif reflects on the harmony/disharmony possible from pd as well as the universality of possibilities -- pd is elemental enough to be a building block for anything and as such represents everything.
[\a/] Camoflauge color set gives a sense of utility and functionality, with adventurousness and a bit of artistry thrown in. Camoflauge also hints at the chameloan nature of pd which can be used to make anything you like while blending in.
[\a/] Brick/adobe color set suggest energy and yet suggests architecture, house building, and a do-it-yourself spirit, coupled with a southwestern flavor.
[\a/] Hangkul color scheme fuses ancient principles of waves and sound embodied as mysticism through community, with the futuristic and practical.
(all designs by X. J. Scott)
I like the jin-yang idea, but wouldn't go for a 1:1 copy - even with the changed colors (which I don't like). I think the letters should be easier to recognize.
Maybe something like this: www.glui.de/files/p2.png
just a first quick sketch... (the d is snatched from Dreamweaver, so this wouldn't be my actual contest submission)

Didn't you make one like that? You should repost it.

On the main Pd window, its spelled "Pd", so that seems to be official.
I think that there should be some basic ground rules for the icon
contest. Here's my suggestions:

Here it is. It doesn't use the official spelling, isn't b&w, but it is done with Pd. ;)

no logo!
use pd only to design a logo otherwise it's too ugly
pd courier font in a bang or an object is great
in my opinion every logo designer should design for himself but the public version should be basic ascii stuff
no contest (we all won)
the pure-data.org design isn't so bad in a way

- has to be designed in Pd
- should be black and white, (at least a majority black and white)

I don't really get the 'use Pd only to create the logo' mentality (and really, is that even possible?). Sure screen caps, but that's still got to be cleaned up somewhere.
Anyways, you raise a more interesting point: we all win. Is there someway to allow the user to pick from a range of icons on install? Sorry, not familiar with the process, so it might be more trouble than it's worth, but I think that might be a nice solution (and be very in line with Pd philosophy; of course, we could also just have an icon repository with instructions on how to set the icon for oneself).
Cheers, Nicholas

I pixelation in 9a or 10. But I think it would be nice to have more than one element, like a bang or a message.
I started a Pd Icon 'Topic' on pure-data.org:
http://www.pure-data.org/community/icons/ If you create a 'Document'
with your icons and a description, then under 'properties' select the
keyword 'Icon', it will show up on this page. I am trying to figure
out how to make the 'Topic' display the images so you don't have to
open pages to see all of the icons. Anyone have any ideas?

There are a number of logos around. I am all for a logo contest. I just made a set and put them in the Windows and MacOS X installers. My main point is that he app and file icons should be different but related.
Here's my attempts: http://www.pure-data.org/Members/hans/icons/
We should set up a "Topic" on the website to gather all of people's icons. I'll do it when I get some time unless someone else beats me to it. I am still a little vague as to how to how to create Keywords for the topic.

hi all,
some ideas for a pd an pd-plugin logo....
its available as .xcf @ 512x512 also, with layers .... so it should be easy to modify if wanted ...
greets,

How about something symbolic and really clean... Like a nice stylized lego block...
I'd be happy to make one if anyone thinks its a good idea, maybe TM issues?
It needs to be damn simple... The max icon is a drawing of some guy, I presume "MAX" and a wisk!!!! I think a lego block would be way cooler....
I'll keep thinking...

I really like the lego idea. Here's a crude sketch of what comes to mind for me:

Maybe someone with vector drawing skills could make a nicer version.

Perhaps someone could take the lego idea but replace the the bumps at the top of the brick for midi controler knbos!
