argh...this is a real newbie question, but im being driven toward the brink of insanity trying to compile flext (and therefore all the objects and abstractions that require it). I have the borland c++ compiler (and seemingly have pretty much no clue how to use it) and have a growing conviction that i haven't grasped pd's reliance on msdos. I'm not asking to be babied but i sort of get the impression that my introduction to pd has not been comprehensive enough. anyway any suggestions?

Hi Chris, i don't know if i understand right, but.... in order to compile flext with bcc you have to edit the config-pd-bcc.txt file to match your system and then run build-pd-bcc.bat. Please note that with the Borland compiler you cannot compile threaded externals (like readanysf~). Another free compiler for Windows that allows this is gcc of the cygwin package.
best greetings, Thomas

Thomas, while we're talking about flext compiling on windows, are you still planning to try with mingw? Last week, I tried with cygwin but I was not successful, so I used bcc. I'd much prefer to use mingw, since it doesn't require the cygwin dll. Also, it is possible to build a flext dll and link flext externals dynamically? -- Marc

Hi Marc, i never tried mingw, but i guess i should.....
Building a flext dll and dynamical libraries is in principle fully supported (but still inofficial since i have yet to deal with naming and versioning issues). Shared flext libraries are already built under Linux and OSX. Under Windows, edit makefile.pd-msvc to enable the shared targets. You should probably not enable sndobjs or STK integration for that. Then, just build your externals with -D FLEXT_SHARED (this will also enable threading) and link to the flext.dll. It's a good thing since it will make flext-based externals really small....

yeah, the exact problem is this notion of editing it to match my sytem, what does it entail? i'm afraid that despite the actual simplicity of the whole msdos "thing" it's actually outside my experience. I'm getting rather used to the message "bad command or file name" (even when i, say, try out files like build-pc-bcc.bat) i think i need a crash course in msdos, any suggestions?
