hi,
i've used pd a lot for sample/recording based audio work, and for video, but i haven't done much in the way of syntheesis. i've used reaktor for a lot of synth based work, but i'm interested in moving entirely to free, and more flexable, software. i'm just wondering if anybody has built any synth patches in pd and what kinds of synthesis you have used.
thanks,
matt.
I'm currently using two medium-sized PD patches based on granular synthesis (with nqpoly~) and frequency modulation. I also use spazialization (few reverbs and vbap) and sampling patches and some other utility patch (hdr). I'm focusing on solving some user-interface issues, developing a external performance environment, and then I think I'll keep using the possibilities of these patches for the rest of this year with no further dramatic development except for improving the control I have on them.

On footils.org I published several synthesis patches and externals. There are a lot of FM-synthesis thingies, which is one of my favourite old-time synthesis techniques.
My angriff drum module uses a bit of substractive synthesis, i.e. filter rich signals (noise~ in my case) in various ways. Substractive synthesis also is the base for my pd303 abstraction, but it requires LADSPA plugins, so runs only on Linux and OS-X, sorry. And my buzz~ external is like substractive synthesis without substractions.
To get a start with substractive synthesis, I'd recommend the cool "Synth-Building with Max/MSP tutorial" on http://www.creativesynth.com/tutorials/004_SynthBuildingMSP/sbm_index.html
It is Max-specific, but it's very well written and as you already know Pd, you might be able to work around the missing objects.
Waveshaping is an interesting concept as well, and also a classic technique with astonishing results for being so primitive. I played with it in the waveshaper Pd-app on footils.org
Then granular synthesis is quite popular, but apart from simple pitch/time shifting it is to be rather difficult to use sucessfully.
Although I provide the syncgrain~ external on footils.org, I use it only rarely, and when I do, it's to get glitch sounds.

In my (still not deep) experience it requires accurate choice and exploration of the sample(s) you are using. Also a granulation patch can be used to achieve many different things depending on the scales of values of the parameters that you are using: it can be a pitch shifter or a randomized sampler or kind-of riverberator. I find this really fascinating and in next months I would like to explore it working together with other synthesis techniques. Control on the granulation sequencer may be relevant and expressive when you are working at lower granulation frequencies.

Granular synthesis sure is vey interesting, but I share your observation, that it is hard to tame without spending a lot of time in experimentation and tuning of parameters.
It can really take months.
