I could try again with planet ccrma, which version should I use 8 or 9? It is only a 120mhz pentium1, do you think that would meet the minimum system requirements?

I think that Frank's point was that you would be running PD without the graphical environment anyway, so problems configuring the display would be pretty irrelevant. You'd probably want to program your patches on a machine where you could see what you are doing, however ;-)
I've run Planet CCRMA on older computers like the one you have, and I would say that the default graphical environments (either KDE or Gnome) are both way too heavy to get anything done in terms of audio on 120mhz. I would install something bare-bones like Debian or Gentoo, skip the window manager or run something very light like blackbox, fluxbox or xfe and/or run your patches in a non-graphical environment (which is what you'd be doing if you ran PD in DOS, if that were possible).

As Derek guessed correctly I was indeed thinking along the lines of a terminal-only machine without X, however with a P120 you should be able to run X at least occasionally. (I ran X o long time on a 486/133MHz as my first really *fast* Linux box - some years ago.)
I would recommend to use AGNULA/Demudi. If you choose the minimalistic desktop which is using fluxbox as Window manager you should be fine, or rather so.
With your display problem: As this is more a Linux problem, I would recommend to ask about this on a Linux list. The Agnula users list is a perfect place for this and you will find several readers from pd-list over there as well, including me. To find a solution some technical info is needed, like the graphics card (chip) and what error messages you get, how your config files looked like etc. I'm sure this problem is fixable and I guess you will have much more fun with old hardware by using Linux on it than by using DOS or Windows.

I hope to tell nothing wrong, but I think I remember running Pd under Win 3.11, and there is the "nogui mode" for Pd. I never tested on a pure DOS OS. But I think that should be possible, too, (why not? netsocket...?, audiodrivers?, MIDI?)

With a PI 120 you probably will not be able to run realtime audio in good quality. I think you should be able to use 11 kHz with high latency (depends on your patch). For 44k realtime audio you may use a PI 350Mhz (that is in my experience the miniminimum system requirement).
