I wanted to add a directory with own abstractions to the ones which are loaded in Preferences -> Path. I now already solved the problem by editing the org.puredata.pd.plist file.

You can also just write it into the textfields of Preferences->Path and then do a "Save all Settings".
If all textfields are already full, just use add it to an existing field and separate it with a colon (:) as in "/usr/lib/pd/extra/:/my/cool/abstractions:/my/externals/" or so.

Holy crap. The colon thing just saved my life. THANKS! :)

yeah cheers frank. that is super handy.
I wonder where I've read about this "trick", it's a very old one. I thought it was in the html-manual, but it's not there (anymore?).
I now added it to the TipsAndTricks wiki page: http://puredata.info/docs/tutorials/TipsAndTricks
