hi
i am recently looking for a nice way to create quite fine structured graphical noise in gem. it should be controllable in speed as well as in grain size. well in general it should really be a noise generater. more something like a film grain generator.
anyone ever succeeded in building such a thing? i would be happy for any hints. maybe a grain object would be something for to do lists.

pix_aging will put some 'noise' and scratches over your video. The
particle system is somewhat analogous to granular synthesis for 3D.
Are either of those close to what you have in mind?

maybe pix_set and some further pix processing would be a way to try. but i guess its not optimal. i think i have somewhere a patch laying around, i will dig it out later and mail it to u.

well yes. allready looked up pix_aging. but somehow i wasn`t really happy with its results. what i am looking for is not dust and scratches but filmgrain. the grain pix_aging produces is not really fine structured. but anyway. i think i will try around a little more.

well the particle system would be a good thing. but there is the problem with openGl. a 3dimensional particle system (well maybe not in commercial 3d applications) tend to be more like little lines then concrete pixels. what i am looking for is something like a 2d particle system which can be textured on geos. i think that could bring nice results in grain generation.

Also I found the pix_aging quite 'rough'. As Wolfgang writes, the filmgrain looks too much like pixel-blobs. Where I was looking for is more fine scratches, but the scratches in pix_aging are far to big, they are more like thick lines over the picture. Is there a way within pd to adjust the structure a bit? Or, is there a way in Gem you could draw 'scratches' [more like etching] on a picture?

I agree. I was playing around with the particle system as well; but didn't quite get it to do what I wanted. But a 2D system could be interesting.

well, i don't want defend pix_aging, but just for clarification: [pix_aging] is pixel-based, scratches/grains/... are (if i remember correctly) fixed in size (this is: pixels). e.g. a scratch is (say) 2 pixels wide. now if you have a 64x64 image, this is indeed very broad (1/32 the image-width); if you have bigger frames (e.g. 512x256) the scratches become much finer.

...yeh, this is in the pipeline (have you been peeking at my harddrive?): I've long wanted a "pix_perlin" or other "noise generators" that could be used as generative textures...pix_aging could be used in the meantime, just do the math in pd and use pix_set...

here the promised grain generator. i would not call it a solution but a proof of concept. esp. the huge amount of random numbers use too much cpu.
