Hi list,
Is there an equivalent of Max's [coll] for Pd? What I'm looking for is the possibility to read directly a given line in a text file, without reading the preceding ones. Moreover, one feature I see in [qlist] and (I think) not in Max's [coll] is the possibility to re-read a file that is dynamically growing. If the equivalent I'm looking for exists, does it work like this too?
TIA
Cheers, Guilherme
Hi.
I want to export a composition i have done in PD to 8 individual soundfiles. What is the best way to go about this... i'm on windows and want to use 16bit mono wav files if possible.. I don't think that the defualt soundfile objects with my windows version of pd work (the docs say linux only) are there win ports? and any instructions to go with em ( i have too many objects with just in(outlets) and no idea what to stick in em :) .....
thanks
Tom
hi tom if you know, how long the files will be, you can have 8 arrays to which you record the sound. from the arrays you can save every soundfile-format you want. there is also sfrecord from zexy. sme. ----- Original Message ----- From: nullpointer To: Pure Data Sent: Thursday, August 01, 2002 12:34 AM Subject: [PD] Multiple audiofile writes from pd...

I checked the release notes of my pd-0.35-test29 install:
"In MS windows, you can now use "readsf~/writesf~" for spooling sounds to and from disk."
I'm on linux, so I don't know, if that's true, but I suppose so ;)
Usage of writesf~ is simple: Just connect your signals to writesf~ objects, send them "open somefile.wav" messages to specify the filenames to write to and then "start" and "stop" recording with appropriate messages.

Yes, it is. It has been included since 0.35 test17.

hi, writesf~ seems to write a file, but the windows mediaplayer cannot open the produced file, although other windows-programs can. but there is another problem, if you have 8 channels of data, the ram will soon be out of memory... (?). maybe zexys sfrecord helps. marius.

One could also just write the files each after another and put them together afterwards in CoolEdit or something similar.

It should only be a question of having enough disk space I think. Perhaps the reason Windows media player doesn't play it is taht it can't hack 8 channel soundfiles?

I've been researching jmax and PD, trying to decide which I want to run with. I see advantages to both, but it's beginning to look a bit like Jmax is an abandoned project. Most of the links I select even on the main page are dead. I've seen versions from 2.51 - 3.1 but don't know which one is the real one. I can't get it compile correctly on any OS.
PD, on the other hand installed really easily.
Anyone have any info on the state of the latest jmax? Where it stands? Is there a good place to get up to date info on it?
Thanks,
Lee
I don't know what the scene is with jMax, but France is largely
on vacation right now and the jMax mailing list seems to be down.
Personally I prefer pd:)

i'm surprised !!
more seriously, some not-too-partial elements of choice can be found in the mailing-list archive :
http://iem.kug.ac.at/mailinglists/pd-list/
just, search "jmax".
we're not gonna get through all of this again. nothing has changed much.

not having committed my mustard in the past, i'd just like to comment that i also have tried out both jmax and pd, concentrating on jmax (2.4.x, 2.5.x under linux) for a goodly while until i realized that pd's resident memory signature is oodles smaller than jmax's (all that java) and that when it comes down to it, they both offer pretty much the same kind of processing possibilities... these days, i prefer pd.

I am perhaps a little less biased than Miller :-).
I looked at both PD and jMax a while ago and am subscribed to both lists as well.
I eventually settled on PD - it doesn't look as nice as JMax (but lets not get into that one) but it seems to have greater support and a more active and vibrant community of externals writers - without wanting to get into any politics PD seems a little well, free'er than jmax too but that might just be my perception.
PD is easier to get running as well. (in fact on windows I just regularly download the latest zip and wop it over the old install)
You are not going to loose out either way - the basic concepts are the same in both and you will find switching easy so just dive in...
cheers
