thats too bad because it seems like quite a bit of work. i just cloned master from git on my rpi and started following these instructions:
http://pandorawiki.org/Porting_to_GLES_from_GL
but realize i cant devote the amount of time it would take. maybe someone else though....
i tried to email dmotd with no response.
heres my terminal output from the suggested shell script: http://pastebin.com/HdvENgSG

It's a lot of work to convert GEM to GLES - all of the Geos and the texturing code need to be rewritten. In a few years the mobile GPUs are going to be powerful enough to either run full GL or GL will merge into GLES (or vice versa), so maybe just wait that out.

It doesn't need to be done by one person, or even at one time. If someone starts the process and posts their code publicly, others can contribute as they find time. This is how a number of things have gotten done, like the MinGW support in Pd, or even the MinGW support for Gem (which is not complete).

afaik, the mingw support for Gem is as complete as it can be. what works: compiling Gem and plugins what does not work: linking plugins against proprietary c++-libraries that have been compiled with MSVC.
the latter will never work (unless mingw changes it's c++ ABI to match that of MSVC - or the other way round. none of it is likely to happen ever). unfortunately, some important Gem-plugins in w32 use proprietary C++-libraries compiled with MSVC, namely the DirectShow components of video-capture and movie-playback.

It looks like a Qt dev has added the required headers to MinGW: http://blog.qt.digia.com/blog/2009/07/15/phonon-and-mingw-a-story-about-true...
And this guy says he got webcam input working: http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gnu.mingw.announce/966
MinGW does link against all of the various standard Windows libraries fine, and I think its safe to say that Microsoft uses their own compiler to build the system libs.

that's all true, but unfortunately you missed the important points:
those built with MSVC. this is due to different name mangling schemes.

that's all true, but unfortunately you missed the important points:
- Gem currently uses a C++-library (from M$) to access DirectShow
- C++-libraries built with mingw are *fundamentally* incompatible with those
built with MSVC. this is due to different name mangling schemes.
Ah yes, C++... here's a bit more on that topic: http://www.mingw.org/wiki/MixingCompilers
So I guess the solution would be either to use gmerlin on Windows, or reimplement that stuff in C...
