I've been away from Pd for quite a while, and I see that pd-extended is no longer a thing?
I want to use GEM, so: I have Pd-0.49-1 installed and working. I went to 'Find externals', searched for 'gem' and installed:
Gem/0.94~pre1 (deken-archive for macOS Intel/64bit) Uploaded by zmoelnig @ 2018-12-23 18:17:43
This seems to have put some stuff into the Pd app bundle. However, when I try to open an example, most objects don't seem to be found, eg 'gemwin… could not create'.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks!

It's no longer updated and has fallen behind. Some may say that Purr-Data has picked up where extended has stalled. http://puredata.info/downloads/Pd-L2Ork

That's the correct thing to do.

Deken (the external manager you have used through 'Find externals') should have asked you if you want to add Gem to the search paths. Did you say no to that? Of so, add the path manually in Preferences->Paths. Did you restart Pd?
Open a new patch, make an Object [Gem] and keep an eye on the Pd window console. Then try the examples.

Thanks, but I think I'm going to have to give up. I did a clean reinstall, went with the default paths that were created, but still nothing really working in gem. Tried purr data, but gem is only supported under linux and windows, which is not an option for this project. And my old pd-extended does not seem to be able to make a video show fullscreen on the mac. Off to try something else! Thanks anyway.

what version of osx?
GEM video stuff has not been working “correctly” on osx for quite a while…

well, the 0.94pre1 release was done on the days before last christmas (that's a month ago) and it is supposed to work on macOS mojave.
there have been a couple (well: plenty) of bugfixes since then, and i hope to get a 0.94pre2 release out in the next few days.
the final 0.94 release is supposed to run on Linux (from armhf (like raspbi), via i386 & amd64 up to s390x), macOS (powerpc, i386 and amd64) and Windows (i386 and amd64).

yay, that's the spirit!
thanks for waiting at least 1½ hours after posting on a mailinglist about resurrecting a project that is apparently ~6 years old before giving up.

seems like you didn't load Gem.

hopefully. you shouldn't allow deken to automatically add search-paths. the entire functionality was an ugly hack for Pd<0.49.
Of so, add the path manually in Preferences->Paths.
you shouldn't need that with Gem.
what you do need to do is *load* Gem. creating an object [declare -lib Gem] should do that trick for you. this will also add the Gem-path to the search-paths of Pd, in order to find all those nifty objects like [gemwin]. (if it doesn't that is a bug; but i doubt it is)

Fair enough, but wouldn't that mean that all the Gem examples should have a [declare -lib Gem] in them?
From a usability experience the mechanism is like one would expect from a programming environment where one has to add includes to provide library functionality on top of installing them. Users coming from Apps like DAWs might think of externals more like plugins and might be confused by the extra step to be able to use them, I think that was the rationale of extended and Purr-Data to load all of them no matter if they are used or not. It's a different paradigm, it just needs to be clearly communicated to the user.
just my 0.2 ct..

to stay with this analogy: in programming environments we pretty much never include all available libraries but only those we need. there might even be conflicting libraries which we don't want to load at the same time.
maybe loading everything works in "batteries inlcuded" approaches like Pd extended and Purr Data, but in Pd vanilla the user must/can decide whether they want to enable libs selectively via [declare] *or* always load them by adding the path to the Pd search paths and/or loading the lib on startup. it's both a burden and a blessing.
but wouldn't that mean that all the Gem examples should have a [declare -lib Gem] in them?
probably. multi-binary libraries don't have this problem because objects will load automatically, but in the case of single-binary libraries this might be a good idea. I don't see any disadvantage but I better leave this to IOhannes :-)
