after reading about knoppix on this list, I obtained the image. it's
truly the coolest!
I also got around to try it yesterday and I can confirm it's a
pleasant suprise.
I guess knoppix uses oss because it does sound configuration with the
red hat utility -
Yes, I think that's the reason.
if I recall you can't get really low latency with oss? does pd even
work with oss?
I'm a big ALSA fan, but both of this isn't true. You can get low
latency with OSS as well and PD works just fine with OSS. Running off a CD is a lot worse latency-wise.
I'd much rather use alsa, but you know what they say about beggars.
I know somebody mentioned this before, but it would be amazing to make an audio oriented image of this. or I might have to install linux. hehe
Throwing away OpenOffice and installing PD and some other soundapps on
it wouldn't be that hard.
I'll take a closer look at how to customize Knoppix the next days and
will report here. Probably customizing is easier if one is running Debian, because that's the base for Knoppix, and I am running Debian.

I didn't do it at the time, because I didn't find any "make your own knoppix"-scripts or any apt-archives to easily (de)install packages. Then I didn't look into it deeper.

you can find it on the knoppix.net site under documentation:
http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/KnoppixRemasteringHowto
biggest problem with knoppix and audio is the lacking auto configuration for alsa drivers. it only supports oss (iirc).

i am currently working on a knoppix modification. maybe I find time to remaster a "pd-knoppix" too...

yes. oss-support only. however there are more linux live cd distro in development. dynebolic for example utilizes alsa and comes with pd pre-installed (alpha versions) http://www.dynebolic.org/

well .. finally found some space for it and here it is: a first, quick version of a mini pd-knoppix or how it could look like...

[ pd, gem, pd-externals from demudi; fluxbox, mozilla, xmms, tkmixer..]
