hi robert, feedback suppression should be quite easy to achive w/ the vasp external. fft the incoming signal. check if there are 1 or 2 bands which are much louder than their neighbours. if so multiply that bands which an adjustable value <1 and than take the ifft. feedback noise is a pure sine (until it's getting so loud that it' distorts) so they don't have overtones and cause a significant peak in at most 2 neighbouring bands.

That strategy seems like it'd be good for a piece of dedicated hardware to do. Do you know of any?

I've used the getner before, and have been exposed to the vortex. These are in the class of "echo suppression" do deal with a lag between the input and the output (mics and speakers). Often used in video conferencing and other open mic/speaker setups.
they are HELL to configure and expensive...
I think McGill or UQAM are working on software echo-suppression stuff.... ?
