Hello,
I'm using streamin~ and I can't avoid using it on a windows box (it's the one that has a 24 in / 24 out soundcard). I was having trouble using streamin~ on it because sys_addpollfn was (I assume) sucking up all the cpu after a disconnection on the client side. Does anyone know if Guenter is still working on this external?
I hacked the external to get it to sleep for a millisecond before returning when there's no data coming through the socket but I don't think that's the best solution (it does appear to solve the problem though) and I would really like to know if anyone has found any other streaming externals - streamin13~ and streamout13~ don't seem to work at all. If there are any with multiple channel support that would be really great.
I'm really surprised that there aren't many other uncompressed audio streaming externals. The mp3-streaming externals simply won't do because of latency.
Anthony
PS - I'm not sure how the threading works in pd, but for some reason I'm under the impression that I might be putting the entire pd app. to sleep with my hack - if that's not the case then I'm not too but if it is I think I'll need to find a better solution.

I will leave for holidays tomorrow, so I can't look into the problem now. I have to investigate the state of these objects (haven't used them for a long time and I didn't know that anyone is using them). I was planning add multichannel and lossless compression support, but I don't know when this will happen.

of course nobody is using them, because they don't work on windows and on unix it only supports one channel. ;-)
i still think it would be the best solution to make a Pd external from jack.udp ( http://www.alphalink.com.au/~rd/ ), but i only can suggest it, as i don't have the time to teach myself C :-).

Well, this won't work on Windows, either, because of lack of jack. Besides: there already are some jack~ externals by Kjetil.

I'm not talking about jack support for Pd. jack.udp is a jack client that can send or receive audio stream over udp from another jack.udp client.
I suggest to use the same protocol for streamin~/out~, because you don't have to invent another multichannel transport protocol and (for example) Pd on Windows could send/receive audio streams from/to a jack on another machine.

Sorry, I don't get the joke :(

I cannot find the message i replied to. This shouldn't be a reply to the quote. IIRC, you wrote that you don't know that anyone is using the streamin~ externals and I replied that they are not used, because they don't work very well and are not very useful without multi-channel support (IMHO). I tried all the different versions of streamio(13)~ and posted several times messages to the list about this in the last 2 years, but nothing happened since then.
this is not a complaint! i know this is open-source software... :-)
but it'S still a problem with Pd that there are too many externals scattered in the net, outdated and not maintained anymore. sometimes with same names and slightly different behaviour. i know you are aware of this problem (the CVS is a huge improvement). But Pd is still a user's nightmare.
Where is the bug tracker?
