I find tooltip a good solution, even becuse they are good to show many informations (object current value, object debug, wire 'sniffing', inlet names, and so on...).
About the wire-sniffer thing, I would like very much even an integrated scope and spectrum. [As now I make them with two GOP abstractions]
However since these things may suck your cpu, I would vote for making them enable/disable-able from the preferences.
About the wire-sniffer thing,
padawan's presumably 'simultaneous invention's both have previous incarnations: jsarlo's "magicglass" patch, and matju's [display] object.

and these exist, as scope~ in cyclone, and various toxy/gridflow widgets
i am thinking some kind of generalized action to draw backwards, from an inlet to outlets, and merely hovering over the outlet is enough to make a temporary connection, eg, place a scope~ or display or GOP-objectinspector in the corner of the patch and inspect everything by hovering over their outlet with the temp cable..

It would be very nice to have those toxy widgets included and "just
working" in the Pd-extended package. Currently, they are quite a bit
of work to get running...

It would be nice to have required tk libs in pd-extended for the ix widgets with a good pkgIndex.tcl and in windows a dll that works.

I believe its just a matter of someone doing the work. I don't even
think it would be that hard.
