Bear with me -- I'm just getting started...
I'm trying to include the qdelay object in a patch. I've tried duplicating, copying, and pasting the object from /usr/lib/pd/doc/7.stuff/audio-playpen/1_DSP_INTRO.pd but when I paste it into the new patch window it appears without inlets or outlets, and I can't connect to it.
Am I missing or misunderstanding something?
are you just copying the [qdelay] object box, or did you copy the qdelay.pd file into your working folder as well?

Ah, I had just copied the object box, thinking that that action would bring the file along.
Now if I can figure out what the default working folder is...

The "default working folder" is the current one, where you started PD, plus any folders you have as "-path"s in your ~/.pdrc or on the command line.

Actually, the current directory is only searched if you put a "." in your path. The directory that the patch was found in is always searched first, then the directories in the "path". The "path" contains "extras" plus whatever you add by specifying "-path" to Pd's command line or to the ".pdrc" file.
This is confusing -- I get confused between current directory and the patch's directory -- but don't worry, it will only get more confusing when I try to handle "site" configuration file handling...
