Hello,
I believe that vst~ won't create, unless you give it the name of the vst you wish to use. Try putting your favorite vst along with it in the extras directory. So, if your vst was named "myVst.dll" you'd want to create the object something like this:
[vst~ myVst.dll]
Also, you don't need to edit the registry for it to work. Hope that helps!

If you don't want to put the vst DLLs into the pd directory, you can start pd with a batch file with something like this:
PATH=c:\your\vstplugins\path cd your\dir\to\pd pd.exe nameofyourpatch.pd
