maybe this isn't the most pretty question, but did you checked if pd is configured to work with your midi setup? try pd -listdev to know which devices you have around, or if you have a recent version of pd start the program as usual and go directly to Media->Midi settings, and there you can play around until it goes right. the "Test audio and midi" patch should be enough for you to check if midi works, see the midi in and midi out boxes. for a thorogh explanation of midi in pd download and install sabine's pddp help patches, they're quite handy.
as said before, the cheatsheet in pd is called with a right-click on an empty point of the canvas -> help. it brings up the textfile 0.intro.txt, which is in the folder [pd]/doc/5.reference/. the advantage about this is that you can also edit this file: my version of the file is more than 3 times longer as the original, because I added the externals and libraries that I have installed in my computer.
of course you can go to comercial software, but does it adapts itself to your ideas, or do you have to adapt to theirs?

No, not exactly... I can't get PD to set any MIDI IN device. Nor will it allow me multiple MIDI OUT devices for some reason. Okay, undoing the MIDI revolution sounds all right but for now outputting MIDI (probably into Audiomulch) would be the easiest way to get prebuilt sounds since there are not a bunch of prebuilt synths etc. for PD. I want to use PD
to do logical processing and create aleatoric rhythms and melodies.I know there are flags that can be set on start up, but from the binary installation I don't have access to change the start up (I don't see any batch file), and I need to keep this installation because it has all the libraries with it.
If I can't solve this I'll unfortunately have to use commercial
software...~David
