Hi list,
sorry for this basic question, im trying to add externals to my 0.37 version of Pd runing in a Mac OS X 10.3.9 G4
I have to put in the comand line (-lib xsample) but it doesnt work. Maybe i didnt copy the folder in a properly place.
Can anybody explain me step by step how can i do that?
Ive got another two questions:
externals ive got(only know the objects if i go to the folders and read the documentation) .Is there a way to know the objects and the main function?(im looking for something like ctrl-click on the canvas and help that works in the distributed version)
in my computer?
Sorry but im a very beginer.....
Thanks a lot.

Well, the easiest thing would be to copy the external *.pd_darwin file into your /path/to/pd/etra folder, which is always included in the path. Otherwise, in your home directory's .pdrc file, add the line -path /path/to/the/external for whatever external you want.

- my trouble in Max with externals is that i dont know exactly what

Your best bet is to check the info at the pure database (http://iem.at/pd/pdb/) which I rarely use, so don't blame me if it's outdated or something, or the individual documentation of each external. Some, like zexy provide ways of getting this information in Pd, but it is up to the programmer of each external to provide this stuff. Also the help files are the best way to learn how to use an external, provided the help file exists!
- How can i take a patcher that somebody puted on the web as text and load
in my computer?
Also, to copy a text of a patch and 'convert' it, just copy the text into a file with textedit, then save it with an appropriate name. Then you can just click on the file, hit return, and edit the name so it ends with '.pd'. This can also be done through the command line with the command: mv file.txt file.pd

Thanks a lot.
Don't feel bad, no one's born knowing dataflow programming!

Still i dont know how to make it works...

I dont know where is that folder, ive got a compilation that somebody gave to me, when i open pd the wish window and terminal are opened. I did copy the Pd aplication in my Aplications folder, and i made(i think is silly) a new folder in the same place called Pdexternals. But i cant find another folder with that name...
if it's one of those one-click installers that you used, you need to right click (ctrl click) on the pd icon, and choose 'show package contents' ....and inside there somewhere you'll find the 'extra' folder. put your .pd_darwin files in there

When i use ctrl-click on my pd icon i open the package contents and appear:
info.plist
MacOS: -pd.command -pd.term -PureData
Resources: -pd-file.icns -pd.icns
Where is the extra folder? Maybe i should download another compilation...
yeah, i think there should be heaps more stuff in the resources folder
maybe get a new distro. 'extra' will be in the resources folder.
i'm guessing that with that distro you don't even get the help files, right?
get one of hans' distros.
Ok, now ive got the 0.38.4-extended-RC2 version
it has the xsample darwin file on it, even the iem library and i think GEM but didnt try yet. Anyway, when i type in an object box : xsample, the program crash....and close itself
better if i dont use that object....
thank you to all,
im going to try to learn this new version
Hi Josue
My experience was the same with Hans-Christoph's installer. Just get
a copy from http://grrrr.org/ext/ and drop the xsample.pd_darwin file
into your extra folder.

xsample is a library that contains three objects: xgroove~, xrecord~ and xplay~
You have to load the library with "-lib xsample" on the PD command line or by adding it to the startup objects, then you can type e.g. xgroove~ into an object box. It shouldn't crash (even if you type xsample), but I think there have been some problems in previous OSX packages.
all the best, Thomas
Ok, now it works perfectly, thanks to all,
finally, can anybody say me a good place for download GEM? i can try with grafics....thanks again
you all are fantastic
Hi Josue
I believe if you follow Thomas' instructions using "gem" instead of
"xsample" it should work, if you're still using the extended app - no
download necessary there.
