i did this kind of things (colordetection) with pd and pdp+pidip. it works like a charm and it's fast, even if you use an object multiple times, in my case 17. it's linux and macOSX only. but i think you should give dynebolic (dynebolic.org) a try, it's a linux live-cd and i think the mentioned software should run without installing anything. http://ydegoyon.free.fr/pidip.html
if there is no 3D involved i think you rather take this then using gem. most people i know working with linux and webcams are using the ones from philips. i think 740 (yellow rubber focus, not red) but i tried logitech and it worked as well, have a look on the supported models list of the pwc-driver: http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/
if you need to stay on win i don't have much idea what to use, probably eyesweb could do this kind of things. (OSC communication with pd)

Yes, i can see the live-picture in My Computer where the Quickcam is listed. (Installed the newest driver from Logitech) The NVIDIA Card is a GeForce FX 5950 Ultra (just updated the driver, did not help) [gemlist] works, but as soon as i hit enter after writing [pix_video] pd crashes.

Can you access the QcP4K from XP's Image Capture control panel? Can you capture streaming video? Can you do either after Logitech's software (minimal install) is installed?
The Quickcam Pro 4000 certainly works in w2k, xp, OSX, in Pd+Gem. I always do the minimum installation of Logitech software (drivers only). None of the other fluff. What's the version of Logitech software you installed on XP? The latest may not be the greatest. Did you install it from an account with Administrator privileges (should be).
On the Mac, a fully functional (read: not necessarily latest) version of Quicktime is required.

Yes
Can you capture streaming video?
Yes, from outside of gem
Can you do either after Logitech's software (minimal install) is installed?
i installed the software from logitech's website (a 37mb download) there was no option on what you want to have installed or not.

Yes

i see, so my QT might be too recent.
if i do the [dialog[ for [pix_video] on osx the QuickTime dialog pops up but is completely greyed out. after that the only way how to return is to kill the pd process.

well, this is not very specific; unfortunately i am not using Hans's package and i guess he will do updates now and then. could you have a look at what is said at the console ?
i would highly recommend using gem-0.90; if it is not packaged yet, go to http://gem.iem.at and download the binary-zip; this should contain a single Gem.dll (and a very short README). then go and search for the Gem.dll that is installed on your system, back it up and replace it by the new one.

There should be a DirectX icon in the Windows Control Panel. At least there used to be. Then if it's not immediately obvious what the version is, look under help-About. Sorry I'm not booting Win right now so I can't take a look. If it's not there, System Properties is probably a good place to look.

sorry, there is no control panel for directx - at least on the computer i use. since i could not find infos about the version i installed directx 9.0b from micro$ website. does not change a thing: pd crashes as soon as i want to create a [pix_video]

i just installed pd/Gem on a winxp laptop and i have exactly the same trouble in combination with the logitech quickcam pro 3000. pd crashes after creating the pix_video object.
