Definitely not a stupid suggestion, thanks, I'm gonna try it tomorrow. Just thought maybe there might have been a nicer way of getting readsf~ or soundfiler not to try to allocate loads of memory for no reason...

Hi Stefan,
readsf~ does not allocate memory for no reason, but anyhow, the problem you encounter is definitely a bug in PD. (All crashes are bugs).
Anyhow, if you want to help in solving the issue faster, try the patch you have with the latest version of Pd (0.38test10), if possible try to figure out what actually triggers the behaviour.
File a bug report at the newly activated bug reports page:

At least this way your problems won't drown in the masses of mailing list mails.

Hi Guenter,
I actually meant I thought readsf~ allocates memory for the whole file although I wouldn't need it: in any case I was wrong because the same thing happens even without dsp on or any messages sent to readsf~. Just trying to make a patch with 20 readsf~s crashes pd (now 0.38 test 10: worth it for the nice console alone!). I've submitted a bug report for it.
I'm not sure about soundfiler at the moment; it doesn't work for my patch either, but that could just be the patch. I'll have another look later.

I meant that it doesn't allocate memory for the whole file, it just allocating 260kB. Anyhow, I can reproduce the behaviour and adding additional readfs's really uses up all of the memory very quickly. ... very strange.
As a last resort (until the problems are fixed) you could try to use zexy's sfplay.
Thanks for reporting
