hi list please i need some encouraging words... after all i decided to try a laptop-solution for pd. months (or should i say years?) of waiting until rme delivered the hammerfall multiface with a PCMCIA card-interface. it took me more than two days to configure a (fucking) new laptop with linux (it came with WinXP, oh god, i tell you... BIOS hidden, no word in the whole documentation) after loads of homepages visiting and tons of updating-files the x-server is running... but the next problem seems to be the rme-drivers. there is an oss-driver on RME's driver-CD, but only for 7 seven-days trial and no sources and precompiled for only one kernel version 2.2.99. (...).
I compiled guenters drivers but i dont know how to handle the module (i think the pcmcia-card does not work properly)
/lib/modules/2.4.4/rme96xx/rme96xx.o: unresolved symbol unregister_sound_dsp /lib/modules/2.4.4/rme96xx/rme96xx.o: unresolved symbol register_sound_dsp /lib/modules/2.4.4/rme96xx/rme96xx.o: unresolved symbol register_sound_mixer /lib/modules/2.4.4/rme96xx/rme96xx.o: unresolved symbol unregister_sound_mixer
i also studied the correspondence on the alsa drivers for the hammerfall but as i understand, they are not downloadable yet (?). is there a place to download?
any help is welcome.

HI Marius,
I got similar errors... I was never able to get the OSS RME driver to load via /etc/modules.conf for some reason, nor to get "modprobe" to resolve the dependencies. Instead, I put the lines,
insmod soundcore insmod rme96xx
right in /etc/rc.local (under RedHat 7.0 and 7.1). This is for the PCI version of rme96xx; I don't know if this will work for the PCMCIA version or not...
cheers Miller

My guess is that this is because older kernels (up to 2.4, including some of the 2.4 ones) have had problem with allocating non-fragmented 16MB pagefile for the driver (required by the RME) due to having already fragmented memory at the time of insmoding the driver (the same thing is with Alsa driver) which happened rather late on those kernels. Newer ones would simply require a reboot, while older ones (I am assuming yours is) insmod-ed stuff too late in the boot process.

marius, are you sure that there is working linux driver for this card ? I am pretty sure theat mine won't work, because I don't have any information about the card.
the problem that you have with the unresolved symbol is because you have to insert the soundcore driver. (or do a modprobe with updated modules dependencies) .. but it still won't work :(

I remember one or more mails on alsa-devel by Paul Barton Davis, the author of the ALSA drivers for RME cards, that he was in contact with RME people to get specifications for the cards. I'm don't know how far he has come, but in the latest ALSA 0.9 beta there is still no support for this card ... which would be useless for PD anyways currently. [Unfortunatly I did not yet get a reply on alsa-devel regarding the plughw-problem in PD. Maybe they are busy integrating stuff into the kernel now...]

The bad news is: the multiface cards are not the same as the 'normal' hammerfall cards. As I understood it, Paul Davis the writer of the ALSA- drivers for the hamerfall will write the drivers for the multiface cards, as soon as has the info from RME. For more information you should look at the mailinglists of www.alsa- project.org. Or try search on google, since the mailinglists are not searchable.
The good news is that pd will run on windows, and that Paul Davis is a very fast programmer.
cheers
