the model object in Gem does work. i have tried it on different computers, different architectures and different operating systems.
there is no other way to load a .obj file in Gem (well there is [multiobject], but this is really just an extended version of [model])
please provide more specific information:
a .obj

Save the help file as something else and reset .obj paths

What are the configurations (versions) of your computers : Pd, GEM, OS ? Because here, [model] works fine with Pd-ext 0.41.4 and GEM 0.92.2 on Ubuntu 9.10. ++
