Hey list,
I found myself on Wikipedia today inspecting "our" site for Pd. I made some changes, added some info and uploaded a screenshot of a patch I happened to have open at the time. The screenshot before was really pointless, didn't really do anything at all. Not to be too self-conscious, but the Max wikipedia page has an Autechre patch up... so I'm inviting anyone out there to put up a better screenshot than the one I did. I'm sure there's more impressive(-looking) stuff out there, and as we know (from Autechre), it's all about how impressive your patches look, not what they sound like. ;0 I know that Wikipedia also has capability to upload PD (as in Public Domain) sound samples up, though it's hard to know where to start with Pd. Also, is there anything like a list of actual performing artists who use Pd either live or in studio? I'm sure several on this list are worthy of mention...
The page could use a little expanding as well. I put back the contended assertion that Pd is (like Max) a dataflow programming language, maybe better to say "based on the principles of dataflow programming" or something like that. Tear it apart. Please. Just put it back together.
Best,
David
ola~ i have made a screenshot from the netpd-project.. what do you think?... Perhaps its also good to show a wired heavy patch.

Nice patch, Moritz. It's now on the Wikipedia site.

Nice patch(es) moritz! You know it's hardcore when you need a manual! This is net-pd? Where can I get a tarball of the files?

hi Kyle
here it is: www.netpd.org what you see on the screenshot are patches made by different people using Roman Haefeli's netpd framework. usually people are online afternoon/evening Central European Time. would be nice to meet you here!

hm a better picture..
Didn't I read somewhere that two of the things that separate Pd from Max/MSP are the scalars/data structures and the ability to compute both audio and video simultaneously? I find the lack of scalars and data structures in every other programming environment I have tried to be the biggest advantage to Pd. I wish there were some way to describe these functions so that commercial-software-educated musicians could appreciate them.
At any rate, I think Pd's data structures should be mentioned in some way in the Wikipedia entry.

Hey, that's a good point. Anyone got any dazzling examples of data structures? (Frank B? Anyone?)

I think that's a good example of how Miller intended the graphical
data structures to be used. But personally, I think Frank' examples
really highlight something much bigger and more important: that the
data structures should be seen as a flexible what of making GUIs,
displaying/storing data, etc. That's the direction we should push,
an open-ended system, rather than just something to write musical
scores. Plus Frank has cranked out so many great interactive patches.
I guess the Solitude image looks nice when you say "this makes music".

I think it's just as important to find an elegant wording to describe just what "data structures" and "pointers" are for people with little experience, who might be deciding what programming environment to learn. I remember being intrigued and yet really intimidated by the explanation in the manual. I usually tell people Pd lets you make lists of arbitrary items, each of which has certain parameters that you decide, and Pd does whatever you tell it to do with each item according to those parameters. I make it too abstract for most people.

describe just what "data structures"
-Reads like a poem: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_structure
"pointers"
-Slighthly less prosaic, but nonetheless readable: http://www.cs.cf.ac.uk/Dave/C/node10.html
