hi,
i just installed pd on a UBUNTU notebook and i am getting error messages when opening the help-intro.pd patch. some vanilla objects (sigmund~, bonk~, choice) can't be loaded and give the following error messages:
/usr/lib/puredata/extra/sigmund~/sigmund~.pd_linux: /usr/lib/puredata/extra/sigmund~/sigmund~.pd_linux: undefined symbol: __pow_finite /usr/lib/puredata/tcl/../extra/sigmund~/sigmund~.pd_linux: /usr/lib/puredata/tcl/../extra/sigmund~/sigmund~.pd_linux: undefined symbol: __pow_finite sigmund~ ... couldn't create
the errors for the other 2 objects are similar with the following differences:
[bonk~]: undefined symbol: __exp_finite [choice]: undefined symbol: __logf_finite
these are my specs:
OS: Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS Release: 20.04 Codename: focal
PD: Pd-0.50.2 ("") compiled for Debian (0.50.2-3) on 2020/02/24 at 22:30:39 UTC
can somebody help me ?
thanks a lot in advance
oliver
See https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data/issues/975#issuecomment-626352674.
AFAICT, it's a packaging issue with that Ubuntu version. Try to build Pd from source instead.

Perhaps this bug is not present in another version of Pd packaged for
Ubuntu? On Debian I am using
aptitude versions puredata
which shows me
$ aptitude versions puredata
Package puredata:
p 0.47.1-3 oldstable 500
p 0.49.0-3 stable 500
i 0.51.4-1 testing 900

yes.
in Pd-0.50 there was an underlinking bug reported as [975], which was fixed for Pd-0.51.
While i am the Debian packaging team for Pd, i don't have access to the Ubuntu repositories, so i cannot fix the problem for Ubuntu-20.04. Ubuntu-20.10 already has a fixed version.
in any case, you probably should file a bug-report against the Ubuntu package: $ reportbug puredata
(otoh, i've never seen anyone working on a Pd bug in Ubuntu, so it might be better to first find someone with the actual powers)

anyhow, i saved you the trouble and reported it myself as LP#1939293
hopefully i'll be able to provide a fix in the Ubuntu/focal repositories in the next few days.

ok, we are almost there. however, *your* help is required to make the final steps.
a fixed version of puredata-extra (which provides the failing external) is going to make it into ubuntu/focal.
because focal has been released a while ago, we need some feedback that the fixed package is indeed working, before it will become available for all focal-users.
if any of you are using Ubuntu/focal, i would ask you (very nicely) to check whether the proposed fix works for you (and does not introduce any new bugs).
how?
reproduce the problem (not being able to load any (or all) of [bonk~], [choice], [fiddle~] or [sigmund~])
repository. on the cmdline this would be as simple as:
apt update && apt install puredata-extra/focal-proposed
using synaptic or other GUI-tools is probably even simpler.

Ubuntu really wants user-feedback in order to let packages into an LTS-release. so if you are running Ubuntu/focal - even if you do not use the Ubuntu packages for Pd¹ - please help you fellow users by confirming that the fix works.

Was just about to confirm that the proposed package fixes the bug, but it seems it's already been done by someone else.
Thanks IOhannes!

You could upgrade to the newest Ubuntu version and check if the Pd package has been fixed. Don't know if that would be quicker/easier than compiling Pd from source :-)
Ubuntu imports it's packages from debian testing, which means that if a fix for a packaging bug for a non critical package was released in Debian testing after a particular version of Ubuntu was released, the fix will not automatically find it's way to Ubuntu until someone creates a bug report and makes some noise.
I'm sure the Ubuntu Studio dev team would assist in both confirming a possible bug, as well as uploading a fix, if contacted.
