hi,
i have a [receive] in an abstraction. the abstraction has a number of creation arguments. i want to be able to name the receive using 2 arguments, for example [r $1-$2-foo]. is there any way to do something like this? it's easy for [send] because of the message method of building sends, but how can i make the corresponding receive?
thanks.
m@. www.ekran.org
never mind, i just searched the list archives and found exactly what i need.

oh, but now i have one more question.. sorry for all these stupid emails.
there's a message in the list archives that talks about setting the send and receive of gui object using messages but it doesn't say how to do it. does anybody know how to do this? it would solve my problem perfectly. i'd love to be able to set the receive of a bang using a message.
thanks,

hi, there is a small howto in the subpatch called "pd edit" of all GUI helpfiles. send a message like ;oldreceivename receive newreceivename be careful when saving patches, because always the receive-name, that you finally change to is saved. marius.

Worse yet, I don't know a good way to fix this problem, which can crash Pd. It migth be necessary to move to some other mechanism for setting receive names in the future.

maybe to solve this problem in the future a set message could be added to send and recieves?

Same problem... I can't find an efficient way to prevent receives from having their symbols reset while they're being "sent through" -- which would crash Pd.

for linux there's the "ext13" library that has the "send13" and "receive13" objects. they both can be set dynamically.
http://pd.klingt.org/files/ext13.0.17.tar.gz
i think it's good to keep those objects separated, because it is good to be able to send "set" messages to GUI objects usind the pd- native "send" without changing the adress.
if there's any braveheart on the list,"ext13" would definitely be great for windows as well. there's an early version of a windows .dll but features only the tilde versions.

It's explained in the help-file for any gui object in the [pd edit] subpatch. You just send a "receive X" or "send X" message.

thanks to everybody who responded. that solution should work perfectly because i only need to change the receive name once after creation.

Late answer, but I just for fun built a dynamic solution for your problem as a pure abstraction with Pd's internal messages. It's attached: "sender" takes 2 arguments, the name of a receive and a send. It sends what it receives to the send-destination. Testpatch shows how it goes.
Both can be set dynamically. The solution can easily be made to work for signal send~ and receives~ as well.

hey.
thanks for all the help.. david mccallum actually gave me the perfect solution. the nbx object actually takes a receive message to set it's receive name.
matt.
